Are you certain that you were only flagged for a rename? I can’t say for sure with forced name changes, but silences and suspensions are usually paired with emails sent to the one registered on the Battle.Net account.
Reckon you might start there, at least. Could be in your spam folder.
Two thing, the email you linked says you were actioned for violating the code of conduct multiple times and your name was changed as a result. That could mean the reports were for more than just your name, thus the silence as well.
Also, curse words and spam are not the only chat violations. Most players find they are silenced for being toxic - which has nothing to do with cursing. For example, what many consider “normal” pvp trash talking will get you banned for toxic chat even with no cursing.
I have not been toxic though (you don’t have to believe me, I don’t expect you to). How long does the chat ban last as there is no indication, people have been asking me questions in-game and I can’t respond, I can’t even ping.
I was not trying to say you were being toxic, just pointing out that a lot of chat violations are caused by toxic behavior and do not involve curse words at all.
We see a lot players come to this forum after a silence, sure they did nothing wrong because they did not use curse words, only to find they were silenced for toxic behavior.
Did you check your spam folders? Sometimes these emails get eaten by spam and it’s possible another was sent explaining the silence?
First offense is a 7-day silence. Second offense is a 7-day suspension. From there, the suspension doubles with each subsequent offense, until eventually the account is banned outright.
It’s possible to get actioned for several offenses and also get a name change. You could be reported for language and not have been reported for your name at all, but a GM then happens to see your name, think it’s inappropriate, and then flag you for rename even though no player actually reported it.
You can appeal your penalties until you are told not to appeal anymore. The employees that patrol this forum are moderators, not GMs, so they can’t do anything for your case directly, but they are able to look into your account records and see what you were actioned for.
If you think the name is in violation of the naming policies, then you’re free to report it. But I would not suggest on trying to look at getting others to report something, especially here in Customer Support.
Also, keep in mind, we don’t know what really went down with the Opening Poster, or what was the name that was in violation. So, I wouldn’t go as far as speculating.
I reckon people saw my name in Trade chat and just right click reported me, so was probs an automated ban. The only thing I have said in trade chat today was ‘are the servers still broken’.
I wouldn’t even bother with him as he’s not being serious. As someone else pointed out perfectly:
Especially considering that they’re now directly referencing me and using indirect speech to suggest that I be reported.
It doesn’t work that way. If your name was reported, it would have to be reviewed by a GM before any action is taken on it. There are no “automated” bans. If your name was changed and you were given a suspension, well I can really only speculate, but you can be suspended just for having a bad name.
There has been a bug lately where some accounts can’t use chat - it comes up as Chat Disabled and it is not related to penalties. The error message you are getting makes me think that might be the case for you.
The usual thing to do is check that Parental Controls did not get auto turned on*, or that you did not disable chat somehow in the in-game chat interface.
Note: There have been recent laws passed in some US locations requiring all online communications media that might be accessible to children, to have all the privacy and protection settings ON by default. There are two or three places in WoW to toggle that - Account Settings on the website, Options Menu in-game, and Parental Controls. All can impact various chat functions. Also keep in mind that Battlenet Chat is not the same chat system as in-game chat for WoW.
