It depends on your environment - from the safety of society in rich countries, we have the privilege to entertain the concepts of morality.
In places constantly at war, poverty, starvation, not so much.
I also didn’t really specify men, but humans in general. We all ultimately are programmed to survive.
Is taking what you need the only option? Because you can try and take it but will you make it? If you die your child will still starve if not worst since there is no one to protect them. If people are not willing to give food to a child they will kill you to protect it. There is no clear cut answer but lots of grey.

Your view is the idealistic one. When the regime in Afghanistan was destroyed by the US, the first thing the people did was group up to survive. Same thing happened in Vietnam, Germany post WW1, Russia, the list goes on.

The point is every single person is capable of violence in the right circumstances, all of us.
Is there ways around that? Yes.
Is it always an option to avoid conflict? No
I’m sorry to say it but psychopaths did actually have their utilitarian uses to (their own) society at least at one point.
It took a certain type for example to be a Viking raider and it wasn’t what we would hold as a pillar of society in our current age.
