OOF… that must’ve hurt
If I recall correctly, blizz said it made it hard to tell what a pet did in pvp or some such.
When I learn that my PvE experience is diminished because of “PvP fairness” I facepalm so hard. How much different would someone’s tactics change if they know the spec of a hunter’s pet?
If it’s that much of an issue, maybe Hunters should have one specific PvP spec for all their pets so enemy players know exactly what to expect.
Pets don’t add that much to the depth of gameplay. Yes, each race has their own special abilities and each spec has a different ability for the hunter to use, but at least in the context of PvP, none of them are damage modifiers (and even then only if you don’t have lust in PvE, which is rare.)
Slimming it down further wouldn’t make life easier for anyone else and it would just frustrate hunters. Blizzard saying they were trying to make it easier is bs hand waving if you ask me.
This doesn’t even make any sense. It’s just their pets. They can already use them.
What are you even talking about? What in God’s name are you giving to other classes?
Nope. This was literally change specs. No points involved.
because evidently someone at blizzard or something got they butts whomped in pvp and blamed it on their pathetic inability to ID what the hunter pet could do…or some such nonsense as it was told in here way back when. lol.
Literally ZERO VALID reasons not to give us our pet specs back so we can use the pet that best fits our character.
I have a dwarf hunter that is all dressed up in a top hat and the big hounds fit his persona but thanks to Ion I cant use that pet without giving up leech…so I just dont play the character and will likely delete it eventually.
found the player who doesnt actually get into the RP of this G, lol
yeah…thats what I was told when I asked when they removed pet specs…someone who sucks at PVP got whomped and whined about it and so Ion removed our pet specs.
pathetic.
yeah…they could have left our specs for PVE, but maybe disabled it for pvp if someone was gonna cry about it lol.
But this is blizzard/Ion were talking about here…the killers of all things fun whenever and wherever the can track it down lol
Why not let hunters lean into the fantasy and have one pet/companion they train to become their ideal companion. Something that you can only do to one pet at at time. It could be done at the stable master and if you change pets the old companion goes back to its normal spec.
This would still leave pet families and that whole fantasy, while allowing for people to customize their companion to them.
I’m actually a roleplayer on a roleplaying realm.
Saying pets don’t add a lot to the depth of gameplay doesn’t mean I don’t RP with my Ottuk, Toast. I don’t view RP as gameplay, since it kind of isn’t in this context. WoW, while a great platform for RP, is not a ttrpg where we’re really meant to express all dimensions of our character (or at least aren’t rewarded for doing so.)
My comment above was in response to the idea that blizzard pruned the ability to spec pets so as to make PvP easier for opponents.
Because every PvPer is going to know what pet does what now when there’s hundreds and they have special abilities. It was dumb then and still dumb now. No PvPer memorized every single pet special ability and family functionality.
I want specs back because I only ever run Cunning pets, cuz of the speed boost. Why cant I have Pathfinding with an owlbear?
No.
I want to use whatever pet I want and not be severely punished for it.
OP specifically wanted to know pets and that’s what my comment referenced. Hope that helps you sleep.
I s2g some of you need a hobby than to nitpick here. Nice hidden profile to ignore.
There’s 60 pet families. I highly doubt even the most diehard pvpers have memorised which pets belong to what family and thus have a specific spec/ability.
I’m also pretty sure there’s only a handful of specs/abilities pvping hunters use, which is easier to expect than having to memorise above.
The pet specialisation change was also done before cashshop ensembles became a thing; a thing they said they wouldn’t do before, because it would make pvp harder for not being able to see what class a toon is from their armour.
All in all. now, 2024, it’s all moot. Give us out pretty mechanical or spirit cats doing cat things.
Using a pet that you like the look of but you know is worse because of arbitrary limitations isn’t a “challenge” it’s just bad game design.
You misunderstood my words. “Challenge” is not a difficulty thing here. You’re challenging “Game 1”, the game they want to make. You want to maximize your damage done, which is “Game 2”. You want your “Game 2” ideals to work in “Game 1”, which is fine, but it’s not something everyone will agree with.
Why not?
We can suspend our belief in realism. But a turtle sprinting at the same speed as a cat looks weird. It also leads into the next pint of homogenization and “one size fits all.” Which is inherently uninteresting.
Everyone picking the same class of pet isn’t interesting.
So you want more of “everyone picking the same thing”, or less of it? I want less of it. Suggestions so far would create more of it, which I disagree with.

This already happens. All pets walk at the same speed and dash at the same rate when you use your pet attacks.

Hunters are now ‘forced’ to use a pet with lust. Or a pet with ‘X’ for whatever content. I’ve seen hunters get kicked for not having a lust pet.
All mechanical pets are currently listed as tanks. From the rabbit to the cats to the dogs. All Spirit beasts are the same as well. From the hedgehog to the cloud serpent to the cat.
That all doesn’t make sense.

In my earlier post, I mentioned that Lust shouldnt be tied to a pet.
My argument is more that “taming” is a core part of the hunter experience, and encouraging it more would be a good thing. I dont want it to be annoying, like having to tame pets in vanilla to gain spell ranks for your pet attacks. But I do want some variety in pet usage for casual players. Making pet families was a good compromise to this, imho.
Ferocity for DPS.
Cunning for Utility.
Tenacity for Soloing/Questing.
I think this system could be made more interesting, but it’s a good idea.
Unlinking Lust would indeed change things.
Still, ‘my’ issue with the mechs and spirits remains. They did it right with the undead though… if I recall. Those are separated amongst the families.

If I don’t get to use the pets I want, because they’re tied to crap specs… I’m doing less taming.
As a matter of fact, I’m not doing any taming at all anymore since this change. I either play Lone Wolf MM or I don’t play my Hunter at all anymore. I used to play my Hunter a lot. They lost me with this change. Just like they lost me as a Warlock player when they removed my Observer after ten years.
