Lol wut?
90% of WoW is trivial content. Also, you haven’t even done anything of note in the game so I hate to break it to you, but you are also one of those “soft players.”

Minecraft is absolutely, definitely NOT overrated. There’s a reason it’s the #1 game, and it’s more than earnt it. ~20$ to buy the game. That gets you 2 versions (Bedrock, cross platform and Java, PC only & extensive modding) that are continuously and constantly updated with better and better updates in recent years, up to and including 1.20 coming “soon”.
Like music? You can make any song ingame using noteblocks. I have the gravity falls themesong and the nightmare before christmas “This is Halloween” songs in my survival base.
Like combat? There’s mods that offer great RPG experiences (Vault hunters is an example, though I have issues with some directions the devs took) with, mostly,
-honestly- better systems than most AAA RPGs and MMORPGs.
Want player housing? If you can imagine it, you can build it. Especially if you include modding, there is basically no limit to what you can create. And functional, too!
Speaking of function… Redstone. The “electricity” and “technology” of minecraft. This stuff is actually insane. Like I’ve been playing for a few years now, and it keeps blowing my mind. People have made functional chess tables using only vanilla redstone. I’m designing an “AI” atm for single player connect 4, for the games district of the server I play on.
FFXIV has worse Button Bloat than WoW, I’d say. Classes be having like 30+ different keybinds, and this isn’t even including keybinds for potions, and other things.
Idk, why should I care? I am not a dev.
If FFXIV didn’t take most of WoW’s subscribers during SL, you never would of gotten DF, cause Blizzard only understands money, nothing else. You think they actually care about player feedback, they were massively bleeding subscribers due to FFXIV, even their top streamers were endorsing it.
In FF14 most people don’t really care about gear though. Its not interesting but that is by design. To the people who really like the FF14 gearing the reason why they like it is because they DONT want to gear up. Id imagine you could replace the gear in FF14 and make it more similar to GW2 and most people would not care.
WoW can’t break itself away from its endgame loop which is always about building players to do M+, Raiding, and hardcore stuff. Anything outside that isn’t a focus of WoW. WoW also has a ton of extremely outdated systems and horrid Rep grinds that STILL aren’t account wide.
If you aren’t doing these things or planning to then WoW has no real endgame for you.
WoW is simply too dated, too toxic towards new players, too complicated, too many buttons to press, a horrid new player experience, has the worst MMO free trial on the market, and simply too slow to change.
WoW won’t die anytime soon but it’ll just remain on the decline as there won’t be enough new players to replace the old ones that do eventually leave. WoW will never reach anywhere close to its golden age ever again. BFA and SL saw to that.
Meanwhile FF14 has a TON of things to do that has nothing to do with End game such as the Golden Saucer, Housing, Fun activities, a personal Island, a WAAAAY better story, many optional Raids and such you can choose to unlock, and ect. It focuses more on community and casual play with hardcore stuff being entirely optional. FF14 is also way easier to learn and has the best Free Trial on the market for MMOs which gets players invested.
FF14 also enforces their community rules while WoW doesn’t which in turn helps promote the toxic culture that WoW is known for and still has.
I don’t have any answers and at this point I don’t see how WoW can change course as the current, older playerbase is way too stubborn and stuck in their own ways to accept any meaningful change.
Take the Free Trial. I suggested it being expanded and the Old heads laughed and honestly believe a level 20 Trial is already too generous and that WoW doesn’t need “Freeloaders” despite the fact that all Data has shown that the amazing FF14 trial has greatly benefitted FF14 and increased Sub numbers.
They don’t care until they do. When you start hitting savage prog people get ridiculous about your gear/parses/meta class.
Well, that’s the optional hard content in FF14. Players that want to get into that are expected to educate themselves and work their way into that community which tends to communicate with each other. So getting a reputation as a bad egg in that community can kill your attempts at getting into Savage content.
The audience doesn’t 100% cross over.
I have absolutely zero interest in a JRPG, I know I’m not alone in that.
Probably because they have to not because they want to, id bet they would probably want a GW2 system over a vertical one.
I mean… WoW is pretty much just a cartoonie JRPG. Take our characters for example or those like Thrall and Anduin.
Literally could be put into a JRPG as main characters without changing a thing about them.
I don’t recall being a skinny blonde with giant hair.
I’ll have to go find a mirror.
I think the bigger question is, “how can either game compete with Genshin Impact?” WoW peeps like to talk about their 12 million during Wrath when recently Genshin was clocking over 60 million people playing lol.
Are you talking about Cloud? He’s far from skinny. He’s built like a greek god and is much bigger than average humans near him.
Clouds are generally fluffy, sometimes white, sometimes not.
Different marketbase. Genshin is a single player game and appeals to the phone game/gacha market. It does help that it was first in the market to do it in such a grand scale, the combat is pretty simple, it fits the anime crowd looks, and the story is actually pretty good. Course a lot of story is hidden behind timed events that does hurt the game IMO.
By continuing to do what they are doing………endgame grind. FFXIV definitely does not have the endgame grind WoW has, you have your extreme trials and savage raids with ultimates once or twice an expansion. You don’t need to run weeks on end of raids and dungeons in FF and hope for good RNG, you get books ( tokens ) so you can buy your gear if your rolls suck.
WoW’s endgame grind isn’t the most creative endgame, but it is whats keeping it afloat
WoW is losing players and their Endgame only focus is NOT bringing in new players. Heck, it didn’t even bring back enough people from BFA/SL to get them to resub hence why Blizzard is silent about numbers nowadays.
That’s a huge issue if they’ve lost longtime players and cannot get enough new blood in.
WoW isn’t dying, but it isn’t growing or even maintaining either. It’s on a decline and not changing their mindset will only have it continue to decline.
Same type of game different end game experiences. WoW has far better raids and dungeons then final fantasy while final fantasy offers a better solo experience and an easier endgame.
You can enjoy both and they both share the same space comfortably.
