How does WoW plan on competing with this game once WoTLK classic is finished? It’s a worthwhile discussion because WoW is finding itself in the position that EQ was once in. XIV does almost everything better at this point (even the raids) and they’re pushing out more patches compared to WoW with more content in each patch.

I don’t care. For most wow players I’d imagine FF has zero appeal. I know it has no appeal whatsoever for me. I’m not into Asian themed stuff I don’t like anime or any of that. I like western fantasy so wow doesn’t have to compete with FF for me. Because even if there were no wow I wouldn’t play FF14
I’ll bite. Realistic answer?
More player involvement, more personal player involvement. More ability to gain strong gear via time investment that isn’t wildly gapped by the “better” gear (savage vs normal 10ilvls normal raid 398 vs 421) - and don’t gate it behind RNG. FFXIV’s tomestone system is so, so, so much better than WoW’s M+ system.
Top end “ultra hard” content is cosmetic/prestige reward only.
Drastically less AI/RNG/DoT gated dps/PvP. As in, 99.9% less. Even classes that have AI based interactions in FFXIV are 100% player interaction based. Dot maintenance is boring, difficult to balance successfully, and DoTs are wildly unfun to fight in pvp. Pets are currently carrying entire specs - and are breaking PvP balance with the newly added “hits 5 or more targets” causing significant damage drops across abilities - given hidden but wildly powerful unfair advantages. Coincidentally, the classes that benefit from it don’t suffer from it.
“Well Semi, how much do you mean by drastically less?” - All of it. I mean literally all of it. “BUT I LUUUUV MY DEMON WARLOCK” - okay, cool, but every single person in the game hates fighting it because barfing out 900 AI’s to play the game for you then running in circles isn’t fun for everyone else. It causes an unrealistic amount of visual clutter/screen bloat, and has such amazingly high reward to risk ratio in all gameplay avenues. “NUH UH MY BM HUNTER IS THE HIGHEST SKILL” - no. Juuuust no.
No more “beginner classes” that are designed with deliberately low skill floors yet still are allowed to have unbelievably powerful abilities. Nobody likes to hear their class was designed with the “beginner class” mentality, but the reality is some are. Some classes are designed to be picked up with very low investment and have equal output to classes who have insane rotation requirements.
Button bloat has to go. Not “pruning”, because “pruning” translated to “taking utility away from classes.” - I’m talking button bloat. A great example is having to maintain a spot on hotbars for Ambush as Assassination/Outlaw. Why? Why doesn’t Mutilate or Sinister just auto update like Death Sweep or Raging Blow/Bloodthirst or any other example? Or Slice and Dice being a busy-work-button 20 years later? Just make it passive. Or Battleshout. Or any group buff, why isn’t it just passively applied ?
There’s a thousand egregious examples of button bloat out there. They all suck. FFXIV has done an exceptional job of cutting out useless dot maintenance, unnecessary buttons, and busy-work activities leaving you with a toolkit that feels like most buttons do something important.

I swear, I tried playing a 2022 FF game and omg what the hell. I played Strangers of Paradise and it’s so bad. The dialogue feels like I am listening to edgy fanfic. I wanted to love it so bad because it had a interesting concept but I couldn’t take the game seriously.
Combat feels like you’re trying to carry 2 cows out the door. It’s so bad, it’s sluggish and slow.
When I bought FFXIV, I felt like I accidentally bought a book instead of a MMORPG. It’s just I can’t go back. The game’s races are lacking individuality.
this was a spinoff made by team ninja (ninja gaiden, dead or alive, Nioh) and is a spinoff that plays nothing like the other modern FF games. it would be a dream if the combat in ffxiv was that good.
