You just keep saying “it’s not a retcon” even when they’re obviously retconning stuff. The main drivers for BfA were the discovery of Azerite and the burning of Teldrassil. Those will no longer even be mentioned for people leveling through BfA.
The problem with erasing the reference to Azerite is …
let’s see … there are entire storylines involving azerite. They would need to rewrite like probably 1/3 to 1/2 of the ENTIRE story of BfA. Not even the cringeworthy stuff. Just core story elements.
Also, they’d need to remove numerous WQ, an ENTIRE reputation, all the artwork showing Azerite.
The amount of whitewashing they’d need to do is insane.
Like I said, I’m hoping its some kind of spaghetti code issue. The fact that they ever wrote this kind of cringe in the first place is just as bad however. Even if they scrapped it and just haven’t updated data files, they considered it.
EDIT: Oh, and its no longer JUST people talking about stuff in game. Wowhead provided an update, both of the before and after. So it is indeed in the data files and not people blowing smoke. It is genuinely in the data files.
Oh God!!!
Why don’t they just kill the alliance, then?
After all with ICC, with Gilneas, Theramore, Pandaria and Darnassus, we have to pretend that none of this happened due to the Horde’s characteristics then or that everything happened from another point of view ??
From one roleplaying Kaldorei to another, take the lore with a grain of salt and do your own thing now. It’s a shame. Enjoy the funny and interesting parts where you can, incorporate the parts that are cool, leave the fat that makes the game terrible.
If anyone brings it up in-character, just shrug it off and move the subject. There is no use keeping up with everything that has happened.
Retconning several characters worth of progression just because they themselves are retconning an event that changed the lives of literally every single one of my characters is not on my agenda, and I’ll be damned if I let myself become angry or sad over this game’s lore again.
Saw one change that did come across as a “made for china”.
There were items in Torghast called Urns. They changed the name to something that doesn’t imply death.
With as much as Shadowlands is all about death, I wonder how they’re going to censor the expansion to meet China’s laws. I mean, I remember some of the changes they made to Wrath. This is going to be even worse.
I really want to sit in on their storyboarding one day. “Let’s have a war, then introduce Azshara without giving any depth to what it means to all the Elves, and then finish it off with a good dosage of the Black Empire which we have been building up since Vanilla, but barely give it any actual story.”
It’s like a cake with chocolate, strawberry, and green tea all in one, so it’s obviously going to taste like crap.
The undead night elves instantly switching sides is easily one of the most aggravating bits of story I can remember in this game’s history.
I can understand some night elves being angry at Elune and their commanders. I 100% buy that. I can understand some of them wanting to become undead, there’s always been an element of night elven lore where they miss their old immortality.
I can even understand some of them deciding to join the Forsaken. You could make an interesting character out of the, I don’t know, one or two I could buy that happening to.
But there’s just too many who switched sides with an immediate hatred for their own kind rather than the faction who did everything to them in the first place.
