we had to go through the dark portal to get to outland. which is really far from azeroth

I would say until it is written in lore, then they are still in Allerian stronghold, because that was their post and even home for the time between the dark portal and TBC.
Even when Ion says something or any other Dev says something doesnt mean that in game it has changed.
the problem is the devs words trump your wishful thinking and there is no lore reason for them to be them anymore. its even harder to imagine this when auric, their leader there, already left
Its not wishful thinking. its just talk from them. Until Represented in-game or novel⊠then its just talk.

Donât forget, one of the High Elves from the Allerian Stronghold expressed how Terokkar Forest was her home. It isnât hard to imagine that other High Elves there feel the same way. Thatâs something that has been expressed in-game.
