Same, public chat is pretty much over for me too. Too many trigger happy reporters in the game as it is.

i mean half my characters live in firelands right now cause rag refuses to drop his mount (got 3-4 flightless birds from that place but none of the flying ones)

They can’t. There is no report option for that. Those are suggestions for how to get along well in an MMO. Not something they can enforce.

The report options are for language, spam, cheating, etc. Check the in game right click report options to see what is reportable.

Here’s the issue with their current moderation, however…

People are so toxic, and then as soon as met with toxicity, people respond back as to not be “bullied” by that toxic mentality that exists - AKA “don’t be so toxic to people, I’m not gonna take it, I will one up you” etc – and then the instigator reports the ‘victim’ in this case - and blizzard then takes action against the original victim who was simply standing up for himself/others against the types that need to go.

I’ll be completely honest here - I am as good-hearted as anyone who is deserving of my attention/help in the game. I’ve literally flown noobs around to help them with stuff they are struggling with. I’ve literally volunteers hours of my own time to help random people from trade chat or that I met along the way get into a new raid and get some pieces of gear, despite there being no upgrades for me.

I’m also the type that - if you tell me that I am trash at the game - I will point out, to you, exactly how that A) isn’t true and B) you could have, yourself, made the situation better that you are blaming me for in the first place - whether that be with avoidable damage reports, or whatever pertains to the situation at hand.

I always fear repercussions from Blizz staff, however. I am not a “sit back and take it” kind of person – I will stand up for myself, or other innocents, until the day I die. This goes for gaming, this goes for public situations (AKA I will not sit back and record someone getting jumped or beat up against their will, etc). I literally am one of the good guys. But I guarantee that I have been reported more times than the average person. And yes, I have been playing this game since 2006. I’ve never had action taken against me - but I’ve been downright crude to the people that are the toxicity of this game…and those that will be the downfall of it. I fear that those who are like me - are going to take the fall for a lot of this - due to that “crowd’s” uncanny reliance on clicking the “Report” function as soon as they feel defeated in their toxicity.

I hope I’m wrong…but if the in-game moderation is anything like forum moderation…I fear for the future of the game, honestly.

Nothing like combating their own toxic workplace by punishing the players more in game. Players can choose already to ignore toxicity by using the /ignore function or addons like Detox that will even filter out a message for the user like they never even received it in the first place. Unfortunately, their co-workers don’t have the same luxury. Blizzard, congrats on making the game even less social and giving free advertising for Discord.

Yup if anything more and more of the people using discord already will use it more permanently now.

they added some stuff gameplay sabotage.
and trust me in eso i killed the guy who was going to be emperor and got a 3 day ban due to sabotage mass reports

i have had general.trade and zone chat turned off for ever ill just be tuning off whispers i dont want some ban happy world quester saying help me and report me if it dont thats in the first part of the contract you MUST do your best to…lol.

How do you turn off whispers? I know how to disable the gen,trade and local defense but not whispers or even /say

in chat settings whispers is in it.

No. They should not have to. Blizzard set up the rules in 2004 and should be enforcing them. They always have enforced them, but not consistently. The fact ignore exists is not an excuse for Blizz to allow toxic people to run rampant.

If you don’t agree to the rules, don’t play WoW. Simple as that. There are other games that might be more your speed with fewer rules in place.

It is much like speeding. People know there is a speed limit. They know what it is. They know they can get a ticket if caught.

You agreed to the rules limiting chat since you started playing - there is nothing shocking about enforcement.

How come you didn’t quote my other solution which is using the Detox addon?

and just like speeding, it is poorly enforced, is unjustly enforced, and isnt followed by most of the people enforcing them.
one day you could be going 10 over and nothing
next you get a ticket for going 6 over
the next you watch a cop go 15 over with no lights.

this discussion is going nowhere. Blizzard wont change, these rules are going to stay. People better watch out for the tons of squelches that are coming when 9.2.5 drops then it will die and nothing will change.

The suggestions for how to get long in an MMO are not rules you can be reported for.

ESO is not WoW.

Here are the current reportable things in the datamined Contract

We recognize that the Internet is not always a safe haven. With that in mind, please note that the following behaviors are not accepted in Azeroth:

  • Hate speech, including negative comments that target another player’s identity, including aspects like race, gender, or ability
  • Harassment, threats, or abusive / derogatory language and behaviors
  • Spamming, advertising, or other disruptive behaviors
  • If you harm your fellow adventurers with any of the above behaviors, you are subject to punishment up to and including suspension of your account.

It’s a big world out there, with all sorts of people in it. So please try to be respectful of each other, and if you ever feel like somebody is acting against this code, please report those behaviors so that our team can look into it. Together, you can help us make the World of Warcraft a safe home away from home for everyone.

I am not familiar with it. We have an in-game profanity filter from Blizzard though and that is also not an excuse to break the rules.

Yes, because we have had them since 2004!

2004 WoW rules

  1. World of Warcraft Rules of Conduct.

As with all things, World of Warcraft is governed by certain rules of conduct that must be adhered to by all users of World of Warcraft. It is your responsibility to know, understand and abide by these rules of conduct. The following rules are not meant to be “exhaustive,” and Blizzard Entertainment reserves the right to determine what conduct it considers to be outside the spirit of the game and to take such disciplinary measures as it sees fit. Blizzard Entertainment reserves the right to add to or amend this list of rules at any time, and you are responsible for checking these Terms of Use for any newly amended or posted rules each time that you log on.

B. Rules Related to “Chat” and Interaction With Other Users.

Communicating with other Users and Blizzard Entertainment representatives is an integral part of World of Warcraft and is referred to in this document as “Chat.” Your Chats may be subject to review, modification, and deletion without notice by Blizzard Entertainment. Additionally, you hereby acknowledge that Blizzard Entertainment is under no obligation to monitor Chat and you engage in Chat at your own risk. When engaging in Chat in World of Warcraft, or otherwise utilizing World of Warcraft, you may not:

  • (i) Transmit or post sexually explicit images or other content or language which in the sole discretion of Blizzard Entertainment is deemed to be offensive; nor shall you transmit any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable content or language, nor may you use a misspelling or an alternative spelling to circumvent the content and language restrictions listed above;

  • (ii) Carry out any action with a disruptive effect, such as cause the Chat screen to “scroll” faster than other users are able to type to it, including setting up macros with large amounts of text that, when used, can have a disruptive effect on the normal flow of Chat;

  • (iii) Disrupt the normal flow of dialogue in Chat or otherwise act in a manner that negatively affects other users, individuals or entities, including, but not limited to, posting “Spam” messages on World of Warcraft (“Spam” messages as used in this document include, but are not limited to, any effort to use a computer or other electronic device to post an unauthorized and/or unsolicited advertisement to World of Warcraft);

  • (iv) “Spam” by posting or sending more than one unsolicited message or piece of mail to a single address or in a chat area;

  • (v) Communicate or post any user’s personal information in or on the World of Warcraft, or websites or forums related to World of Warcraft;

  • (vi) Use bots or other automated techniques to collect information or communicate or post any user’s personal information in or on World of Warcraft, or websites or forums related to World of Warcraft or Blizzard Entertainment

  • (vii) Harass, threaten, stalk, embarrass or cause distress, unwanted attention or discomfort to another user of World of Warcraft or other person or entity; or

  • (viii) Cheat during game play, including but not limited to modification of the game program files.

  • (ix) Participate in any action that, in the opinion of Blizzard Entertainment results in an authorized user of World of Warcraft being "scammed " or ‘defrauded’ out of gold, weapons, armor, or any other items that he/she has earned through authorized game play in World of Warcraft.

Now can we please agree that these rules have always been in place for WoW and that updates may refine phrasing, but not core content? If anything the rules are more lax now than that were then.
