Hand of Justice and Dual Wield

I have been looking at my HoJ performance for a while now and it seems that there are some issues with this trinket and Dual wielding.

The proc rate is very, very low(as low as 0.07% after 1000s of swings).
The Damage of the extra attack is very very low.

I have tested this with people with 2h, and with myself using a non weapon offhand. The 2handers have a proc rate that is expected and a damage range of the extra attacks that is expected. This is also true using a single 1h weapon. The extra attack is the same damage as a normal melee attack every time.

While wielding 2 weapons the proc rate is consistent with only activating off the MH weapon normal swings(after thousands of hits) and the damage range I have found is less on average than even the minimum damage of a normal melee swing(that must be an offhand strike). For more confusion there is occasionally a normal MH damage hit in there from the HoJ.

According to my swing timer this extra attack is indeed also happening from offhand swings(according to recount everything actually, even blade flurry/evisc) and resetting the MH swing timer for less than an offhand strikes worth of damage. Worth it.

Recount at the very least is counting the number of procs correctly. I would trust the damage range less were it not reporting correctly the single 1h and 2h extra strikes.

Clear as mud? I have had other rogues in my guild confirm this is not working out well for them either using a variety of logging addons.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this were the case. This game is absolutely FULL of bugs.

My logs show the same thing. HoJ works fine with 1h or 2h, but when I dual wield my extra attacks seem to be generated from my offhand. This is especially easy to see as a fury warrior since I have a big, slow weapon in my mainhand and a fast weapon in my offhand.

When I have 1h + shield on my HoJ procs are for about 200 damage. When I’m dual wielding my HoJ procs are for about 70. This is consistent over a large number of procs.

I am not noticing any issues with low proc rate.

Please address this, Blizzard.

wake the F up Blizzard.
Unfortunately ignoring things in your crappy server port won’t make them go away, just the playerbase.

Figures. This “bug” probably is a hidden nerf that was introduced during TBC or something along those lines. It seems like a rule is that whatever was changed during TBC is what is changed in Classic for many items, and it takes blizzard forever to fix it if they ever do [hello rich thorium still only giving 2 taps with few exceptions].

So. I guess this item no longer falls into that comfy little BIS sheet for dual wield characters.

Hrm…

Bump. Look into this please blizzard.

bumping so it can be ignored

Bump for the lulz

So is HoJ still better than other trinkets with this bugginess?

I just ran a UBRS with HoJ and Recount active.

18 procs from 921 melee attacks

This is a ~2% proc rate so it seems to be correct (need more data to really confirm)
The damage however seems to come from my offhand.

I am using Core Hound Tooth + Distracting Dagger as weapons.

Here is a recount screenshot:

In the known bugs list there are bugs involving equipping main hands registering as offhands and vice versa. Perhaps this is what is happening - the game is registering your offhand as your main hand?

No thats something different. Try it out. Unequip your weapons, equip a 1H weapon in your MH and drag and drop another 1H weapon onto it (make sure they are not “Mainhand/Offhand” flagged)

Did some testing too on a single mob in blasted lands to not have some flawed data (no difference in armor or level)

  • Over 4995 auto-attacks: I had 92 procs registered (I was at 82procs at 4000 so obviously got unlucky on the last thousand).
Some of them registered damage in the OH’s range others registered damage in the MH’s range and I ended up with an average 20 below my auto-attacks average (pretty normal with the little data for the procs)
  • Over 1320 Sinister Strikes: got 19 HoJ procs all in the MH’s range and none in the OH’s range
  • Over 123 Eviscerate: got 1 HoJ proc in the MH’s range
  • Had 1case of HoJ interacting with Sword spec

Still think it’s not enough data to conclude anything but the proc rate clearly isn’t less than 0.1%

And about the damage range, it could be the add-ons not tracking the procs well enough, or it could be that the extra attack happens with the weapon it proc’d from (aka: if it procs from your OH’s attack it does damage in the range of the OH) so a fast weapon would statistically end up doing more procs with the OH and you’d be ending up with a lower average than with 2 slow weapons

Ty steak
Nice scientific approach.
I didn’t think of armor values when posting my ubrs data here.
I will not reset my Recount (always wearing hoj) and I will post a screenshot again at 10 - 20k+ melee hits to further approach the real proc rate.

I’d love a bluepost regarding the MH/OH procs and how it works on classic vs the reference client.

I just got done testing. HoJ isn’t bugged, recount is. Other damage meters might be as well. Basically, when you get a proc off a white hit, recount is ignoring the actual extra strike from HoJ, and looks for the next swing, and records that as the extra strike.

As for proc rates, I saw about 2% chance over thousands of hits.

Damage meter addons log info from the combat log. So if the addon is wrong then the combat log is wrong. Which is unlikely that it is. There’s no way to know for certain unless someone tests it.

The only way to properly test it is to get a 2.8 speed MH and a 1.3 speed OH and go do 10,000 melee swings and see if HoJ melee has variable hits to indicate that a MH proc occured. Otherwise it’s safe to assume that it only procs OH melee swings on melee HoJ procs.

Both the 2% proc rate and abilities procing MH work normally in the testing i did.

Sword specialization seems to be working the same way. I’m not 100% sure because details doesn’t show sword spec procs, but it seems like when sword specialization procs on your OH, it just makes your MH swing faster. Like if I was 1s away from a mh swing and it procs on my OH, it just sets my swing timer to 0.
