Guild Wars 2

What does this mean?

Basically, skill is what determines your power, not gear, since there is no gear treadmill.

Hell, in PvP pretty much everyone is on equal footing. There’s no gear advantage.

There are certain sets of stats and sigils that need to be purchased, everyone has the same ā€œilvl.ā€ You can actually go to the PvP lobby, unlock all of your trait lines, and boost yourself up to 80. I’m not very good at PvP, lol, but I don’t do that very much.

Does guild wars have pvp?

It used to be very active.

But, before I left the game, pvp and WvW did suffer player shortage because of poor balance and lack of contents.

Okay fair but all of these games have diehard players who will go down with the ship. This means, at some point, the game itself matters.

Different players are going to like different games. Any game could be appealing to somebody, even if it’s not ā€œthe best gameā€ in sales.

Trying to imagine ā€œone big game for ALL PEOPLEā€ is not going to work. Forget about that. We love the competition. It’s just another form of PVP. And we love it.

Wait. was that the dragon or griffon that you had to farm eggs?

I hated doing that, ended up having the guild leader and guild mate help me.

PvP in Guild Wars 2 is fairly active and it’s quite complex. There are several different modes that you can play. There’s unranked arena, which is 5v5 and you can join either by yourself or with friends. You can do this at any time. Once you reach PvP Rank 20 you unlock ranked arena, that is much like the arena in WoW in the sense that you can only compete during various seasons (the current season in GW2 ends on August 3rd). Just like unranked it’s a 5v5 match-up.

There are also Tournaments, these require a full party of 5 and you need to enroll to take part, the enrollment opens up 15 minutes before the tournament begins. There are two types of tournaments. Daily and Monthly. You need to compete in several daily tournaments before you’ll qualify for access to the monthly tournaments and the monthly tournaments have the best rewards. Place 1st in a monthly tournament and you’ll walk away with:

  • A unique title - Best of the Best
  • 30 Tournament Vouchers which can be used to purchase Ascended equipment.
  • A Gold Llama Box which gives you a choice of a Llama Mini (basically a pet)
  • 2 Champion’s Rest Passes, which gives you 2 weeks access to the Champion’s Rest exclusive area within the Heart of the Mists.
  • 100 Mystic Coins used to craft legendary weapons.
  • A Champion’s Crown novelty item.
  • 500 gold
  • A statue of your character will be placed in the Heart of the Mists until the next monthly tournament begins.

Now you might think that 500 gold isn’t much if you’re used to playing WoW, but in GW2 having 500 gold is quite a lot, so earning that much as a reward for 1st place is impressive. It’s basically the GW2 equivalent of winning a WoW Token’s worth of gold, with some change.

And then finally there’s WvW which is a giant match up between three different server worlds and you fight over forts and castles using siege weapons and the like.

That sounds cool!

Nope, not anymore.

Used to be that way, but now when you jump into PvP all stats are normalized (meaning your gear absolutely does not matter) and you can choose any sigil/rune combination you want at no cost. You’re also scaled up to level 80 regardless of what level you were when you jumped into PvP, and that means you’ll have everything unlocked and ready to go while you’re in there including all specializations etc.

One of the best thing about gw2 is that, unlike wow, you actually do get a meaningful, permanent benefit for investing in the game systems that don’t just vanish a content patch later.

I’m sure wow feels like it has nothing to learn from other mmos, but gw2 - even with all its other problems - at least gets that correct.

GW2 has a Booster Pack and mini pet up on Twitch/Prime gaming now

Once your get past the base story and get into the expansion and living story characters, it awesome. Rylock is pretty badass and he’s low key hilarious. That pyromaniac, explosion loving sylvan whose name escapes me has hilariously dry dialog. Taimi is amazing and her krewe from the path of fire living story is awesome. Joko was a surprisingly good villain and it’s a shame he only go two living story arch. Honestly, once you get past the base game personal story - which is really the weakest story, it really takes off.

Your weapons and armor still have runes and sigils. Along with certain sets of stats, some of those needed to be bought from the PvP vendor. It was the sets of stats that came with the expansions. All the stats are normalized, but some weren’t available until you bought them. I’m talking about buying the options in the PvP gear dropdown, not buying actual items. Unless they changed it to where you just get all the items for free now. I’ve noticed some changes on my revenant, so it could be possible I didn’t notice everything is free now.

LOL…nice rebuttal. On the WoW forums.

Again, so much wrong here.
Dungeons are constantly active, I’m not sure when you’re playing, but maybe it’s a timing issue?

The living world is essentially mini expansions to keep the story going and have been awesome!

Literally how every mmo should be designed. Simply having a better piece of gear should not allow you to win against someone flat out.

Very true.
People are expecting every mmo to cater to everything they want and that’s simply not possible.
Accept the game for what it is and now what you want it to be. You will be much happier this way.

Discussing GW2, so again, why?

Well Gw1 was a pioneer of transmog system style. Its also one the first game to even had that way before WoW or any other game had.

Really? thanks for the info. First time i get a promotion on twitch relevant to a game i care about since i have prime, lmao.

Update, entered the code, it gives 3 boosters and one of the base pets lol. Pretty lame but better than nothing.

Also if anyone SPvPs, anyone mind explaining to me the current meta, Shortbow Rev is now good? Lmao. It was a meme when i quit.

That’s the one thing that is completely awesome about GW2. Nothing is wasted. You could miss out on your dungeon item today, but by merely playing the game you accumulate resources toward equivalents. You can choose to just chill out and farm low level mobs, which would normally be a waste, but every item dropped and every item gathered is a resource for a larger reward. You could do WvW for a week straight and still gain necessary resources for PvE progression. Literally everything in the game is a step forward. It makes diversity of activity so much more digestible.

Another GW2 player here. I pre-ordered it in 2012, played awhile along with WoW, but left for some years because I love to fly & there were no mounts in GW2.

As WoW got worse & the flight fight also started in WOD, I kept looking at GW2, logging in to get the free Living World episodes etc. Shadowlands finally made me realize that I was simply not enjoying the systems upon systems & time-gating of flight & everything else in the game. Due to vision issues I do not current raid, dungeon, or M+, and truly fun solo content like professions (ruined), archaeology (gone), old raid solos for mogs, mounts, & pets (NO legacy for Legion so we stay in current content for time played), etc are just gutted. So no waffles unless you want to run top tier content, because…reasons??? (I miss the WoW from the start through MOP for sure, Wrath was my favorite, but we don’t have that wonderful game anymore.)
I have gone full time to GW2, returning for only one month to get WoW flight in case the game changes back to fun someday. I am just waiting for time to run out Aug 7.
I am thoroughly enjoying GW2’s combat & dodging, free ā€œspec switchesā€ as I desire (without changing covenants, soulbinds, & other dumb systems), exploration as I choose, playing in any xpack, LW story, or area I desire without punishment or time-gates.
I love the races, Rytlock is amazingly sarcastic & enjoyable to be around, there is always something fun to do when I log in, & I do not feel like I HAVE to log in to do chores like I would in WoW.

PLUS, my mounts in GW2 work in every area, every Xpack, ALWAYS. I am not barred & time-gated from taking to the skies for 4 years out of 8 like I am in WoW. For me, personally, that is huge. Any time I log into GW2, I am free to lift off. This is fun in game, it also makes me feel free, light, & happy. Good reason to play a game right? To enjoy it. Thanks GW2
