Knights Templars have some fascinating history. The wealth accumulated because they operated one of the first banking and lending systems as they setup trading houses to support people on pilgrimages. Even more interesting is not only did the King owe them money so did the Pope at the time. Both had borrowed and didn’t want to pay up.
