Blizzard has already done 95% of the effort to give the draenei a subrace, why not finish by actually allowing them to use “Man’ari” when they see their racial nameplate and change “Gift of the Naaru” to “gift of the Fel” with its own icon.

Because that only works with allied races, apparently.
Honestly, I don’t think it’d be too much work.
We’ve got toys that turn us into Naga and Broken, and Vrykuls etc, and it says so on the tooltip.
It will be funny when a demon has some racial dialogue about us, saying “You will fall before the Legion, Man’ari” and stuff like that, lol.

I wish they let us mod the spell icons as well, as for the tooltip, is there an addon that does this? I think that could be done!

Another option is they could have given us another racial, “gift of the fel” that does exactly the same as “gift of the Naaru” but both share a cooldown. So now, you can pick and choose which icon you want to see when you use it and not be tied to your skin.
That turns the customization ability of a race into another race. By this standard, making the appropriate changes to a Void Elf should give them the icon/nameplate of High Elf. Tattoos on dwarfs would also give us Wildhammer Dwarf icon/name. Huge can of worms to open.

Never seen any before. In response to them all: Huge can of worms to open. I do not know what other “triggers” exist with changes in other races offhand, but they would start to manifest everywhere and we would be changing races in the barber shop. Also, regarding this suggestion:
We are talking a solid new race, you even say it yourself. If racial abilities change with barbershop customizations it’s all over.
I think it’s good enough right now, I doubt the subraces such as Man’ari or even Mechagnomes will do anything major to be recognized in the plot. 
Except, its not a new race. It is a race we already have, and doing these things are only increasing the customization options we already have.

they cut corners on it as the draenei are eredar who deserted or whatever so the man’ari eredar are I guess counting as draenei now. Idk…quest line was too short… wanted to see that fourth gem slotted but don’t think that ever happened
If this were to happen, it should really just default to ‘Eredar’, not Draenei. A political stance does not a different people make.

That would be nice. They already do this for certain spells like hex/polymorph.
They could do this with the darkranger mana racial making it bloody/necromantic/shadow magic.
And work for other races too. Wildhammer storm form or something for example. Or void elves getting a arcane version of their racial for high elf stuff.

couldn’t you just create a macro for gift, name it whatever you want, and use a neat fel icon?

Exactly my point, Human should cover Humans of any nation. Ideally they’d allow new voices for Human to be regional.
Because Blizzard should’ve given Man’ari instead of Lightforged back then, but somehow they settled for Lightforged.
Now deal with it.
And in my head, my red mage still thinks of herself as Eredar and is killing off her rivals in the Legion with the help of the “good” guys. She finds it amusing.
