Get rid of these add-ons

I’m gonna have to agree here. It is possible it changes Classic for other people, I’m not a psychic, I can’t say it won’t, but definitely not everyone.

I will also be grouping with friends and guild, and not ever touch this addon. And it will affect my life 0%.

Haha.

The core challenge of old school MMO design is downtime. It isn’t there to accept, it is there to overcome.

preparation, organization, consumables, efficient rotations, better gear, grouping, guilding. All of this is to reduce downtime and accelerate progression.

Unfortunately, that does happen on these forums a lot :frowning:

I’ve never been able to do a good Kirk impression until I read that out load.

Does this LFG addon also scan your talent trees? Why is that necessary, if true?

yes, it does. It is NOT necessary.

I believe no? From what I understand it sends out chat message like “LF1M (dungeon)”, then when someone whispers “invite” it auto invites them.

So its a chat parser and auto invite addon. As far as I know, that’s all it does.

You still have to run to the dungeon, and replacing people will mean waiting for the new person to get to the dungeon, and you still have to run the dungeon as a team so you might want to coordinate roles, etc.

Thank you for the update. It seems many individuals leave out that fact. That is a complete deal breaker…It needs to be broken.

Balloon, I can tell you are a rational individual ( usually get attacked the minute i write something). I don’t understand the need for it. We have been down this road before…history always has a way of repeating itself.

Of course, this is everybody’s plan, right? At least as far as the population of “planners” goes. I am also planning to play with friends/guild and I don’t expect that I’ll need an add-on to facilitate grouping.

But somewhere along the way, not all my friends will be online or the appropriate level for what I want to do. Or maybe months from now not everyone is playing, or people have re-rolled, whatever can happen in a dynamic community-based online game. At some point we’re all going to be pugging that 5th member or that attunement run we missed out on.

I think it is shortsighted to think you (general “you”) will always have a group of friends/guild for all occasions. Even if you’re fine with pugging in /2 or some other public channel (which I am too), as long as a faster and more efficient interface exists, it’s going to impact the grouping experience.

Finally, I support add-ons, especially ones that improve the interface. I think a group-finding add-on can work in theory. Just not this one, especially if it’s displaying talent points. That is nasty.

I typed this on my phone, rest assured I don’t consciously hyphenate add-ons every time.

I’m not sure why you would think this. Is there a link that shows it looking at specs? From everything I’ve read it just parses chat and auto invites.

Totally understood, you seem pretty rational as well

Its true, I’m sure at some point I will have to pug people, or even join one. I’m half expecting my friends/guild to all quit in a few weeks when the nostalgia wears off and I’ll be left to find a new group of more dedicated people.

Its inevitable. I still won’t download this but that’s just because I don’t want to and I find addons more of a hassle (I know, I’m weird).

It could work, in theory. I just think that if it does break game play or the community, then the devs will ban it.

I also think super rage over every little thing is really unnecessary (not directed at you at all, just these forums where things can get crazy and people start arguing over everything in 50 posts that have been brought up about the same thing over and over).

Edit: Final thought, I agree with you that addons in general shouldn’t be banned. I don’t use them but as long as they don’t violate the ToS then someone else using them doesn’t affect me, so why should I advocate banning all addons?

I just am stepping in on your conversation for a minute. When I start to see HUGE amounts of activity over a simple addon it raises warning signs for me. You know that old saying…Where there is smoke there is fire.

Maybe, and maybe the smoke all over the forums all the time has desensitized some, like myself. So when I see smoke and there is actually a fire, I’m like, “oh, its just more smoke being blown up everyone’s keister. Nothing to see here.” So that’s probably not good either.

Thats exactly what it is. This is just something to complain about until Classic launches. People are bored and antsy. I spent all day yesterday arguing with them and when you call them out they have no argument other than “Slippery slope! Slippery slope!”.

Ballon- Watch closely what is about to happen. I appreciate chatting with you.

It is obvious people are divided with these add-ons concerning what we expect from “the community”. Even thou I am against any kind of add-ons who minimize or disregard the interaction between individuals I do believe an “add-on free server” will make everyone happy, including Blizzard which needs to take a side or stand against one of these communities.

In the end I will do my part not to use any of these add-ons so most likely on my road to my journey I will never cross these people willing to use LFG, LFD, etc. add-ons , thanks.

The problem with this is “old school” to who? I consider Ultima Online, Everquest, old school. Some MUDs are even older than those and could be considered old school MMORPGs.

Warcraft got popular because it catered to so many different playstyles, including incredibly casual and yes even anti-social people. The interview yesterday really made it seem clear that as long as the addon isn’t playing your class for you they don’t see it as an issue.

On a somewhat related note, I really like the idea of a completely addon free server for both Classic and Retail. I think it would be interesting to see how the community interacts with the game when they have nothing but the base UI.

So much misinformation amongst the classic bashers. I have been writing addons for World of Warcraft since 2004, my first addon written September 19th 2004 for Patch 0.10, a rangefinder tool. I wrote many of the applications found on Jargs website. The “group finder” addons that people are claiming to exist in vanilla in fact did not exist. the first semi-functioning grouping addon was released in 2007 and not refined until 2011, for private servers. / join world is a channel that many people falsely remember as being in the retail version, this is a gm feature that was simply changed from a 0 to a 1 on many private servers. Unfortunately the people defending this addon and its history in the retail version are either being intentionally obtuse, or genuinely confused. They will not listen to or investigate facts, they will claim you are wrong and they are right. Being intentionally obtuse is typically used by someone wishing to avoid a result that would come about by a display of their actual intelligence. Blizzard has already stated many times that this addon will be broken immediately. As someone said above me, it will take a bit of time to assure that no other features will be arbitrarily affected. That said, this is subject is a non-issue and has already been clarified by blizzard more than once. Here in the forums, constructive feedback, facts, and anything else under the sun will be met with vile toxicity. quite sad that these forums bring the worst out of people. Have a nice day. See you all in retail and classic.
