I think they are just goblins with a different natural evolutionary path or had somewhere along the line been either altered by the naga or corrupted by nzoth. However they could also just be ancient goblin ancestors. Maybe there was a time when goblins were found primarily in the sea?

There is this quote from Lenu and another from Grizzek in Mechagon that states"Seems hobart wasnât as honest as we thought about some of his inventions". Plus another issue is that. If it is true that gilgoblins were created by hobart, then it couldnât have been any longer then 18-30 years ago. Now this begs the question. How is it that the gilgoblins would have propagated and developed culture in such a short time? I suppose it could be they grow faster and die young. This is ultimately speculative, but it does seem plausible.

Ahhh retcons gotta love em. As for propagation and population? Goblins have kids like bunnies, why would gilgoblins be any different? We still got subject 9 and hobgoblins as genetic tampering!

Maybe. Another possibility. Though again only speculative. What if hobart created the gilgoblins that we see escaped in Vashjir, but the ones in Nazjatar are naturally occurring. What if for example he used the DNA of existing gilgoblins to do this and thats why the ones we see in vashjir are as unintelligent as they are.
