Take a deep breath because we are all racist. Our brains are optimized to look for patterns, that is, generalizations. The less actual information we have the more generalized our perception is. It’s how we are wired.

It comes down the values we’ve attached to those generalizations. Are we active or passive racists? Are the values we assign born of unfamiliarity or acquired antipathy? It also gets to be complex. I’ve seen good “humanity is one race” type folks noticeably tense up around a person of color. Then there is my late uncle. In the 1950’s he worked in a mix machine shop and was fine with Black co-workers. One day one of them suggested a weekend barbecue to my uncle who calmly informed the guy he didn’t believe in having people like him in his house. I can’t fathom the betrayal and hurt that guy must have felt. For my uncle, it wasn’t personal, it was just the way things were.

Now for me, a nice white guy about five years older than Cyndilou, being the recipient of negative racial responses just isn’t a thing. The closest I can come was being poor, on food stamps with an obese mother who would send her grade school aged son to do the grocery shopping. I remember the glares and the snide comments about poor trash and stealing people’s hard earned tax money. It gave a powerful sense of being despised for something I had no control over and it really hurt. To this day, more than a half century later, I still flinch when cashiers get that look.

Does this mean I understand what people of color go through? No, because I could change things as my differences from the majority were only wallet thick, not skin deep. I have not experienced a life time of active prejudice and constant slips of the tongue and small actions that remind one that they are “different.”

So, ease up. This is a serious problem but responding to it with your own prejudices isn’t going to help. We can’t directly change others for the better. We can lead by example and show there are better ways to do things. We can use the law and company rules to deal with blatant acts of discrimination and stand up for folks.

We must continually come to see the generalizations, the prejudices we still have and face them. Don’t focus on your family, focus on the well meaning and good guy you see in the mirror and you’ll change at least your part of the world. It seems small but, like drops of rain, the cumulative effect is very powerful.

Popatoes in Pajamas - new educational show for the children of Eorzea.

But seriously, she looks adorable. As much as lalas get made fun of, I have seen some pretty dope glams on them. Also, if they ever bring back the FFXV crossover event, I’m gonna make a lala strictly for the purpose of being able to drive the Regalia while standing up. Who needs to be able to reach the brake pedals, am I right?

most adorable thing tbh. and if you crash you can give the excuse that you cant reach the pedals
