Fifty years ago, a friend’s girlfriend got me out of bed because she couldn’t get my friend to answer the door. He was an epileptic and she was worried he might have had a seizure. There was no 911 service back then so we went to see what was going on. Through the window I could see him and it looked liked he’d nodded off in his chair but there was a pistol in his right hand on the armrest.
We broke in and I quickly walked up to hold his arm down so he wouldn’t startle and start shooting. It took me a moment to realize how wrong his arm felt, cold and rubbery. I looked at his face and it was then I saw the darkly colored blood on his left side.
To this day I can still feel that arm and see his head. To this day I can still hear his parents’ anguished cries when the police informed them of his death.
Suicide is a terrible ending of all possibilities for the person, but it doesn’t end there as in its wake there are so many other people harmed. Perhaps a few deserving of some of the blame, but most are those who cared, who must now carry unanswerable questions and doubts about what they might have done differently. There is no coming to an understanding or seeing things from your perspective, all of it is lost in the terrible silence.
Please think past this current moment and consider the loved one’s you haven’t met yet, the books unwritten and who you are becoming. So many treasures awaiting discovery, including yourself.
