I’m guessing he bought them online. Buy at your own risk kind if websites. I don’t think he can sue of do anything about it depending on the websites buyers policy.

The tape over the label was a big red flag.
I’m not a collector, some people collect because of thoughts of double or triple the value of the items.
Antiques can be worth some money, but it would have to be examined carefully for authenticity.

as an old sports card collector it’s strange to me how they could get fooled like that and as someone pointed out in the comments did they even way the box? seems like probably not
