Forsaken Customization

It’s a common arguement some people use to gatekeep others. When someone views something as belonging to them and they latch on to it, any changes are seen as a threat because it might bring new people in with fresher ideas

Not that I’m saying that’s what he’s doing. Just mentioning that it’s a tactic I’ve seen used before

They have upright undead. With tons of customization. Sure, they can only be one class, but they have straight backs. But they aren’t forsaken. Just like Calia isn’t forsaken.

Calia is forsaken. Not liking her is one thing. Denying the games lore is another.

Silhouettes were important design ideas back in classic WoW PvP. Where just seeing one on the horizon let you know if they were friend or foe.

But that’s out the window now. Least of all because the Horde and Alliance now share elven silhouettes. You don’t really see anyone on the horizon anymore when you’re rocketing past the horizon with dynamic flight.

So I’m not seeing how giving Forsaken posture options would be any different from when they gave them to Orcs.

I know that’s literally what silhouette means but that’s not what artists mean when they say silhouette. Like that’s not what architects mean when they say footprint.

If I couldn’t do this I wouldn’t log in. Suspension of disbelief has to do a lot of heavy lifting it wasn’t designed for

I think the game is (regrettably) approaching a homogenized soup, but I see no reason at this point to arbitrarily choose Forsaken as a “this far, no further” last stand, especially with Classic available. That, and we already have limited undead options in the game for most races via DKs.

Okay I still fail to see how that matters when considering upright Forsaken though. In fact iirc correctly they were going to do upright Forsaken about the same time they did Orcs in BFA but the movement animations were too buggy.

I think you can see the remnants of this with the Deathguard in Dazar’Alor who stand upright with their hands on their weapons.

I’m just a hobby artist, but obsessively so. From the lessons I’ve taken at night college and through CG cookie, I can’t unsee the intentional shape language employed in the racial model designs. Those designs communicate information directly to our brains about who these races are. Since it isn’t a single player RPG, your model isn’t your character, but a representative of that race to every player who sees you. The messages the posture and shapes convey remain relevant. Personal preference for ones individual character be damned.

Part of what makes the special models for those characters special is that they are unique. In order to communicate characteristics of Sylvanas they leveraged valuable resources and money into getting her a voice actress, and a bunch of really well written and well delivered lines. Multiple novellas and cinematics. Comic books. Your character doesnt get that. Your character is not special to anyone but you.

These same movements can be done with a good posture too.

Bro, nobody wants to take the hunchback from you. We just want the option to NOT have a hunchback.

I don’t think he understands the game has moved beyond what he’s talking about. Many of the allied races share the same base rigging afterall

And besides, more options will always be superior when it comes to customizing ones character.

It’s not about me. It’s not that I like them hunched over. It’s not that I want to take good posture from anyone. It’s just that if I was the art director, I would fight marketing on this and I’m sure they have in the past.

What people want isn’t always good. People demanded that WoW not try to justify Sylvanas actions in BfA a la Kerrigan and here we are.

And than you would be out of a job because Marketing sole responsibility to keep people playing and spending their money

Why do you think they caved on the high elf customizations we got? Money talks. Loudly

Well, I have been blaming marketing for the state of the story since the latter half of BfA also. Marketing is not a creative director and they should stay out of it. But this is a big-time corporate operation now so game designers don’t get to design the games they want and Afrasiabi was a scumbag so it’s not ok to wish for a Director’s Cut.

One should avoid “always” statements when having a debate because they are easily refutable.

Don’t mistake what I said as a debate. Having more ways to customize your own character is and will always be superior to limited options

Give me a playable Necromancer/Lich and I don’t care if they inflict scoliosis on everyone retroactively. Or Tuskarr. Or both. A Tuskarr Necromancer who specs into Lich. My Phylactery can be a Liberty Medical package.

You’re right. They should allow modding. Let people design their own character models, particle effects, spell sound effects, etc. I want my warrior, when doing bladestorm to yell, “MACHOOOOO!”
