Did not expect this thread to explode like it has, but it’s a bit too large to summarize in singular posts (and I ain’t got time to format multi-quote trees today so there’s that too). That said, I’ve picked up on a couple bits of info sprinkled through by various respondents and it’s not doing a great job at assuaging my worries.
I guess I don’t so much mind if they lock max-level content behind flight requirements (because if necessity demands that’s what the AH and group summons are for), but I really hope they don’t try to tie this into the leveling experience. I’m not keen on going into the air and having to play Microsoft Flight Simulator just to get to a quest objective and back again isn’t doing a wonderful job on convincing me otherwise. I already don’t go in the air unless my hand is absolutely forced (and lol if you think I’m doing PF, those reqs are for the birds), that’s what Flight Masters are for.
I guess what I’m saying is from what I have seen, the flight looks clunky, over-involved, and extremely error-prone. Three things I don’t like associating with a necessary system for travel. Also, mount lockout is kind of a bummer because, well, not everyone likes dragons.
I also wonder if this expansion will require completing the Flight quest to play, because I actually skipped it on more than one of my alts…
The issue here (at least by my observation anyway) is they’re trying to introduce something new that wasn’t in the game in the first place and people are highly skeptical of it.
Like- I legitimately wonder to myself how much animosity this new form of flight would have received if this was already existing in TBC and before GW2 had made the Griffon (which is what a lot of people are implying they’re stealing for dragonriding (I do see it, as someone who plays GW2 myself)).
There are flightmasters from what I see, and I imagine you can traverse on the ground, but with the verticality set up for the zones in this expansion, I wonder how at a disadvantage non-fliers would be.
whats going on with flying now?
You don’t know Ion, he tried to get rid of flying remember? Of course there will be ground options.
I disagree. If you see a node while dragonriding, you will be going too fast to swoop down and grab it. And then you will have to get up speed again…
GW2 also has a lot more teleport spots. Wow has limited portals and real time flight masters. They’d need to adapt more that just the mounts to be comparable.
There’s going to be ground content, obviously. Flying is just a new feature. You should try it out and see for yourself once the game launches before you start throwing stones like 99% of the forum goers here.
Eh, this is the good kind of busywork.
You are a little more engaged for a bonus.
Yeah, but then you’re out the price of the expansion already if you don’t like it. Great for Blizz, bad for players.
True. Idk that’s about all I can say to ease the situation lol. Might turn out that you enjoy it !
I fixed that for you
Personally, I don’t want to have to worry about my travel mode being some kind of mini-game.
I’ll reserve judgement until I actually get to try it, but I hope that regular flying will eventually be added back in.
Also, the whole “jump, flap, and glide” mechanic makes sense for winged mounts, but not for the great many that don’t have wings at all. I think that would look pretty silly on my flying disc or carpet or gyrocopter.
So many people argue that the players who strictly want to use the old style of flying just want to afk and ignore content in game and I find that disingenuous. How is wanting to skip ground clutter any different than not wanting to do any of the many features in WoW? Is not wanting to do dungeons, raids, pet battles, mage tower, Torghast, etc… skipping content too? Every bit of content doesn’t need to be done.
Dragon riding looks pretty cool to me but I see legitimate concerns for players. Everything from some players having a really hard time getting a grasp of the mechanics to they simply don’t like the looks of the dragons* and hate not being able to use their other flyers. Yes, we should be getting regular flight at some point but from what I’ve heard dragon riding speed can be over 900% making those on regular mounts lag far behind. Blizz, and players, shouldn’t have to convince anyone that dragon riding is fun. It should do that on its own. That being said, I do suggest people not sure to take a look at some of the videos of dragon riding is use. It might change your mind.
*I’m not sure what it is with dragon mounts in WoW but oh so many just look off. From the way the legs just dangle while you fly to scaling being off. /shakes fist at storm drakes Why must you be so small! Hopefully I’m able to find a happy medium in the creation process and make something that looks more like the large NPC dragons because those tend to be pretty cool looking.
The point being that there’s a difference between instanced content and the “world” in world of warcraft. Because if there isn’t, by your logic, why should people who want to skip actual killing mobs not just get the loot they would have gotten mailed to them? Why should we allow the skipping of challenges (NPCs and terrain traversal) in one instance but keep the challenges in another?
The terrain challenges are nothing but a time sink after the first time or so you do them.
Because the rewards for the challenges in world content are nearly worthless at level cap.
I think it’ll be fun for the races and whatnot but I don’t want to always be playing a minigame just to get around, especially if it’s hard to do.
Just because I’m flying over extraneous mobs doesn’t mean I’m not engaging with the world. I, and many others, are mount farming, killing rares, doing world quests, etc… Those mobs don’t offer anything I need and take up time I may not have. If I’m doing a world quests chances are I will be killing mobs anyway. lol Trust me, I’ve been engaging with the world for many years. I’m still bummed first aid isn’t a universal profession because I miss patching players up on my hunter. I’m often one who will stick around longer than necessary in case someone needs help with a tough add or group quest. If the goal is to have people engage with ground content why offer a form of flying that might find people never wanting to set foot on the ground? Dragon riding does look pretty cool and should live or die on its own. Blizz should allow players to engage with the world as they see fit.
The problem with the Vault is that it doesnt reward you for all the content you play. If you do raiding, mythic+ and pvp. You should be able to choose a reward from EACH every week. But having to choose just one is a spit in the face and shows they do not care about players time.
