False. People that did the requirements were able to fly YEARS ago. They have been flying all these years! That is not “the shaft”. That is a huge benefit.
Your post pretends that “flying starting now” and “flying for the last several years” are identical. How silly!
They are digging in with their ground and pound game play experience which will fail with systemlands. Bookmark this post for later reference and don’t call me chicken little!
I wouldn’t mind unlocking flight through gameplay if it weren’t so blatantly spiteful and hamfisted. It’s like they looked at Final Fantasy XIV’s flight unlocking system and made a typically misshapen Blizzardian copy of it. Kind of like how their artists copied anime elves without grasping the nuance of their design.
Count me as one of millions who stopped playing due to their flight war. I spent tons of time in Wrath, Cata, and MOP flying around and exploring the world. Wandering around a boring zone you’ve already wasted a month in stuck to the ground is the worst way to enjoy anything about the game at all. I don’t see how anyone with a decent monitor and graphics card can compare the old zones designed for flight to the current tiny continents stuffed with zoo mobs as anything but a major fail and disappointment in every way.
Frankly we might be fine with no flying if it actually let them make better content. But WoD proved they can not do anything with no flying, worse they made the zones have even more cliffs and mountains for us to have to run around and increased daze chance just to make things even more unpleasant while providing the least content by far in an expansion. Legion had more content at launch than WoD during it’s entire duration, BfA and SL have very close to the same amount of content at launch as WoD during it’s entire duration when they tried to not let us fly at all for perspective.
there is a reason for this and its the most important one for Blizzard, its easy to design a progression and history, environments, etc. when players just move on the ground, if you have to go kill a hard mob, that you have to kill all the henchmen before, with dialog and or puzzles. its really hard when your players just can fly to the end kill the dude and leave, so they only will allow you to fly once you have completed what they have designed.
People didn’t complain about flying. Ion hates flying and its impact on game design. Now look, I’m actually a huge Ion H fan, and Ion’s way better than GC ever was.
But Ion looooooves long, gated content chains that make progress as time-consuming as possible. Flying gets in the way of that, so he nixxed flying.
Really once you do ~30 world quests in a region (after max level & finishing story line, obviously), it should unlock flying for that region.
A) It’s not hard; B) If people are trying to get around your content, then it’s not good content; C) even if A and B were wrong, it doesn’t need to be SUCH a slog to get flying.
I recently leveled a toon in the old vanilla zones during the prepatch and actually discovered some things I didn’t know existed in the game because I could fly while questing in the old zones. That kind of goes contrary to Blizzard’s lame reasoning that people will experience more of the game on the ground.
Again, that’s basically Ion’s call. He hates flying, and was going to get rid of it completely. This way he can say “look, you have flying” even though you get incredibly limited benefit from flying.
