I played on ARR launch.
It just seemed so generic gameplay wise. The titan fights were fun but I got queued with idiots who couldn’t help but die to mechanics and then would blame my tanking.
I have zero interest in going back lol.

… and it wouldn’t have a hope in hell of EVER getting localized with that subject material.
Not unless From Software financed subtitling/translating the game themselves and put it on Steam with an AO rating from the ESRB.
I can dream.
I mean at least it’s not Devilman Lady. There’s no freaking way that’s getting even an anime adaptation outside of that crappy ova.
Which is a shame because I’d like to see it done by the folks that made Crybaby.
Breast slider in character creation
I do feel that the PVP in WOW, while in a horrible state right now, is still better than FFXIV… if only slightly. What I think FFXIV does right is give you a completely different set of abilities from the PVE stuff so that they can be balanced separately without effecting the other, along with the flat stat templates so that gear is just cosmetic. WOW, on the other hand, has a greater variety of scenarios you can choose from with various Battlegrounds, the Arena, and (despite its obvious problems) World PVP.
Ya know, the more I think on it, the more I feel that I should change my opinion to the two games are pretty equal to me when it comes to PVP. Both have certain parts I like.
Loved mostly because it’s a FF title. Other than that my understanding is some people prefer the FFXIV class system. It’s also friendly to solo-players which is likely by WoW is moving more in that direction as well.
I think it’s probably a great game but I can’t get past the visuals. But hey, many people think WoW is too cartoony. We all have our own cup of tea
This. It’s what drives most games these days. Oooo look at this new Crysis/Farcry…I wonder if it supports 8K.
I like controls and story over graphics.
Community is managed way better making its players nicer.
Uh I was saying the graphics are good so I’m not sure you can “this” this post if you say you prefer gameplay over looks
I played it all the way through Stormblood, and I didn’t have the money to afford the next expansion yet, so I sort of fell out of the game.
The two expansions, Heavensward and Stormblood, are both beautiful and have wonderful storylines. The side quests are also fantastic, and they even continue some older questlines from A Realm Reborn(when they redid the whole game,) like the Hildebrand questline(very good)
I enjoy FF14’s quests because the main storyline past ARR keeps itself serious. You can then do side quests that are funny and lighthearted, and at least for me, it keeps me going.
I love the depth of the professions too, how it’s basically a class. There were times I didn’t want to do any genuine content, so I could just go out into the zone’s I’ve explored to fish, and it still feels rewarding even if it’s low-level content.
Due to the design of the professions and classes((jobs)), you have practically infinite things to do. You don’t need to make a different character if you want to be a White Mage, but are a Paladin.
HOWEVER, I can say I dislike the dungeon system. As a new person entering an unfamiliar dungeon, even though bingewatching MTQcapture guides for 30+ minutes waiting in queue, the dungeon itself is still unnerving, and to progress the main storyline you MUST do dungeons and the primals.
((that being said, any normal person who isn’t dungeon-anxious would be fine))
Additionally, the spells and abilities have a ‘delay’ before casting so that it can play out a very fancy animation. Coming straight off WoW into a game with casting delays feels very… strange.
And as a job like Dragoon, casting one of your jump abilities, you can very easily die if you don’t predict what the boss is going to cast, and accidently leave yourself in a death cone…
Overall, it’s a fun game in its own right. It’s WAY better when you’re playing it with friends, but I can enjoy WoW without any due to how the most of the content is single-player friendly. FF14 is certainly not for everybody, but it has so much stuff to do that it might just fill practically any niche.
If you’re curious about it, give it a try! If you’re willing to put up with hours of ARR stuff, though… the good stuff comes after, sadly.
I’ll have to correct you on that, FFXIV is actually LESS solo-friendly than WoW.
The main story quests are mandatory, and includes periodic dungeons & trials; and soon, the first set of 24-man raids will be mandatory as well because they’re being tied into the main story.
However, the difference is that grouping up with players isn’t anywhere near the problem it is in WoW. A big part of this is the nicer community and its willingness to help newer players, at least relative to what you encounter in WoW. One of the main reasons behind the push for solo content in this game is because many don’t want to deal with the community.
Now… Why I’m still in WoW?
Pros and cons:
The storytelling is a lot better in FF. I don’t mean the story, I mean the way it is presented. Returning to wow after a break I am presented with story quests from 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 all at the same time with no way to differentiate what order to do them in in order to get a coherent story. And there are optional elements that include important cutscenes. You’d never get that in FFXIV.
On the negative side, if you aren’t interested in the story, tough. You are going to have to do it anyway in order to unlock things.
It’s a long time since I leveled a character in wow so I don’t know what the experience is like at low level these days. In FFXIV you don’t really have a decent range of skills until you hit 50, in some cases 60. At lower levels you may have only 2 buttons to press.
There are multiple daily dungeons to do in FFXIV, and they are not restricted to the current expac, but effectively reduce your level down to that of the dungeon. There’s Leveling, which is anything up to your current level, 50-70, which is dungeons in the level 50 to 70 level range, 80 (current expac), and Expert (the 2 or 3 most recent dungeons), there are also daily raids too. And you can access as many of these as you have unlocked, every day.
Final Fantasy games have always had a strong emphasis on the story and characters, so that doesn’t come as a big surprise. Even with the original MMO’s I always wished there was a good story to give them meaning.
Some of what I hear about FFXIV sounds like Ultima Online, at least for the housing and skill-based system.
The skill systems recently got a huge overhaul, and they introduced a dynamic event that is progressing over the course of the current expac to rebuild a war-devastated area into what will eventually become a new housing zone. It’s clever and fun and offers an easy grind for crafting that contributes to physically changing the landscape as it goes along. It’s quite amazing.
Weak point of FF14
That was the intent. It was an obvious toll.
I started liking the story in HW and went back to hating it in SB.
Summoner started being fun in SB, but by that point I was so burned out I didn’t care.
This. We wouldn’t have the Red Mage Job as we know it if it wasn’t for the community. I remember putting my thoughts in on the class and it’s what we got. A ranged damage dealer that weaves white and black magics together. They even used my idea to have the class dive in do some melee and jump back to ranged. I was stoked when I saw that.
Blizzard used to do this too. It actually took great ideas from the forums and implemented them where they made sense. Like in WotLK Death Knights had their improved frost/blood/unholy presence. Before release you had to be in a presence to get the improvement making the talent all but useless until we said something on the forums and they actually untied them. Allowing you to take an improved presence while in blood presence so you can actually tank in all three specs. Since that was the goal after all.
These days Blizzard hardly listens at all. They keep implementing systems that people blatantly tell them will be bad and unfun a head of time. LIke Relics in legion having traits that you level up. I thought it was really lame and hoped they wouldn’t expand upon this going forward and here we are with just that. Azarite powers. We said please don’t do this but they didn’t listen.
And now they are doing it again in Shadowlands. Covenants are really shaping up to be a major disappointment. Just give us interesting classes a world full of content. From there we go have fun and do what we like. These systems on systems crap is getting really old. My biggest problem with BfA is that I can’t swap specs without getting the right stuff to make it good and we are going head long into that again with Shadowlands.
Torghast seems fun until you realize if you want legendary items you have to do it. It goes from a thing that might be fun into a chore you have to do for player power. If it’s fun, no problem, but if it’s not fun? Well you’ll do it from the orange items anyway.
I went on more of a rant than intended but this is why I currently like FF14 better than wow right now.
Ah, I heard the crafting system is pretty good too – another similarity to UO. How do you manage to play both?
