Sad to say, I don’t really have a favorite. I like them … but probably only because of nostalgia.
WoW’s music has never really stood out to me. Never have I gone, “I should get that on iTune.”
It’s not bad music, it just never really grabbed me.

Real quick, I just want to make a note on here to show an example of what I was talking about. The Sheppard’s tone is traditionally thought of to have a sound infinitely rising in pitch, but the reverse is also true where you can take a sound and have it go down forever, yet remains at the same spot at the same time. The overtones from the “instrument” begin to take precedence over anything else as they slowly become the meat of the pitch, then their overtones gradually take over as it just goes down forever. If you think about it too hard, it will almost drive you insane.
And comparing that, to the Ny’alotha raid music at roughtly 4:40 is when it’s a bit easier to notice.
I just felt like I had to unpack that, I think that’s really something.
great write-up!
I’ve been listening to it on/off while questing, and at 10:00~ is where I hear the cacophony and dissonance of the splicing. It’s great
Last night was the first time ever I noticed the music in Inns in human zones sounds like the music from the first Conan movie.
It seems like running that place for mogs doesn’t yet seem feasible, even with a full 20 man. But I can’t wait to get those purple tentacle helmet things.
Yeah, I can’t wait to run some of the BfA raids for that reason
The Undercity, by Derek Duke.
Since we are on the subject, I’ve been supplementing my WoW time with soundtracks from other games on Spotify. So far my favorites are, Star Wars, specifically the “darth” tracks by Lucas King, Dragon Age, and The Witcher. Any other suggestions on this would be very welcome.
I really like the open world music from Oblivion, it feels immersive to me, cruising the WoW overworld:
I haven’t really found anything that was memorable since Wrath of the Lich King, to be honest. Not that there hasn’t been anything good, just unremarkable.
While I’m at it, I’ll mention that I think SL has absolutely nothing, musically. I find myself listening to my own choices way more than any other expac.
That’s a good one. Skyrim isn’t bad either.
There is so much great music in wow. Hard to pick a favorite, but I really like pretty much all the goblin music and many of bfa’s tracks such as
Thematically my favorite dungeon in bfa with a wicked track.
I am very bias with goblin music
I listen to this on loop often. Has a very pirates of the Caribbean vibe to it.

Love the icecrown music
Amazing faction city theme.
I could go on and on, but these one stand out in my mind the most. These were the ones that made me go wow when I heard them.
WoD has, in my opinion, the best soundtrack of the franchise.
I will go there just for the music. Heh
There are a lot of tracks in specifically MoP that gets me more than any music in the game. Not the inn music, but
For whatever reason, I don’t know if it’s the music itself or the memories from that expansion/time in my life, but it tends to bring me to nostalgic and almost emotional tears. A lot of the crescendos in MoP’s music once the strings get added to the over all sound especially hits me hard. I absolutely adore all of that music from 5.0.
Wholeheartedly agree. I think the WOD character intro screen was epic. I also really loved the gorgrond music. It also helps we can have a juke box in garrisons.
Vanilla - Thunderbluff - just very peaceful, chill music
TBC - Lament of the Highborne
WotLK - Arthas, My Son
Cata - Xaxas
MoP - Honestly, Mists is my favorite expansion but my least favorite in terms of music
Legion - Whatever that song is that plays in Varian’s memorial
BfA - Probably had some of my favorite music to date, I love it all
But definitive winners in my opinion
Any Night Elf flavored zone has great music…Humans and dwarves have good music in their classic zones…but I think the vanilla stv/wetlands swamp theme is my favorite!
Some favorites of mine.
Song of Liu Lang
Grizzly Hills music
Lament of the Sin’dorei
Nightsong
Wintergrasp music
Anduin’s theme (The music that plays in SW park)
And many more that i cannot remember.
Crystalsong Forest has some solid high-fantasy music going on
Have too many I like to name favorites, but something I noticed as thinking about it is that with a few exceptions, music tracks in the latter half the expansions have been more forgettable. Not bad, but I can’t remember them even if I try. Like for BfA all I can remember is the Boralus and Dazar’alor tracks, for Legion all I can remember is the Dalaran theme (which isn’t even from Legion), and for MoP all I can remember is the headlining theme. I can’t remember anything from WoD at all.
