That sounds like exactly what I said, since “expressing permission” is the second definition of “may”. .
" ‘Expressing permission’ would seem to me to indicate that Blizzard permits players to report people using /trade for chat not related to trade."
Show me where “expression permission” for players to submit a report means that such reports will be upheld . Show me where “expressing permission” to submit reports means that continually filing reports that are overturned will not result in negative consequences.
I suppose that it is not possible that the OP of that thread was punished for an actual violation and not just because he was holding a nice polite, civilized conversation in /trade, right?
Do you have a transcript of the chat for which he was punished?
Do you know that he did not commit, and was punished for, an actual violation such as posting the same advertisement in /trade every 15 or 30 seconds, using foul language, etc.
Why do I need to show you anything whatsoever that hasn’t already been shown? You habitually nitpick single words out of context and internet lawyer and warp every single thing. Why should I waste more time on it?
You are the one acting like a flat earther, unconvinced the world is round until you are literally led around the circumference, and then only to claim that “well, it could be a sphere”. I honestly have no desire to spend any more effort attempting to show/prove/demonstrate a single thing further to you. You are simply not worth it.
Case in point.
You have no desire for anything beyond pushing everything into the stratosphere of the absurd.
How goes your attempt to violate the forum COC by creating a new account to circumvent your forum vacation? So far, so good, I trust?
I’m sure that if anyone reports you for violating the forum COC, Blizzard will eventually read those reports, see what you are doing and take the appropriate action.
How goes your futile attempt at getting Blizzard to abandon a system they’ve had in place for over 10 years? If I was a betting man, I’d place bets on Blizzard keeping that system in place for Classic, even if players that may have a financial stake in Gold Selling businesses oppose it.
What is this 10 years/since Wrath talk? I have played the game since then and the system did NOT work that way. Not to mention Blizzard even announced when this variant came out. You could be silenced then, but a GM had to do it.
No it has not, trust me. Trade trolls on my server were constantly mass reported (guilds even announced it) and they never shut up. Entire guilds would do it.
Plus I never experienced it either, and I was far worse in chat my teens. Only a few weeks after Blizzard announced it, I got silenced for a comment that broke no rules but people didn’t like.
Random Google search (I would give links, but the forums don’t let me) came up with a dozen or so results and they are all in the July 7-16 range in 2016. It came out in 2016, not 2008. I even found the original Blizzard post which I will quote. I don’t know which CM announced it, but it was in Legion.

World of Warcraft offers many opportunities to engage with other players in a variety of ways and to help support positive experiences in these engagements we wanted to inform you of a new silence penalty we will be implementing with the pre-expansion patch for Legion. Depending on the type of report, players who are found to be abusive in chat or engage in inappropriate chat behaviors may be silenced from engaging in certain ways within the game.
The Silence Penalty
Following the Legion pre-expansion, any player who is reported multiple times under the Spam or Abusive Chat categories will, after investigation, receive an account-wide silence penalty. While this penalty is active, the silenced player will find that their ability to chat with others is greatly limited.

The first time a player is silenced, their chat will be restricted for 24 hours. This duration will double for each silence penalty received after the first, and there is no maximum. This means that players who receive multiple silence penalties may find themselves unable to chat for a very, very long time.
Silenced players will be receiving a notification when attempting to send a message to a channel in which they have been restricted.
By using the in-game report tool to identify players who may be engaging in inappropriate interactions within the various channels, you’ll be helping create the type of community we all want to take part in.
Now I distinctly remember this because a lot of people were concerned with automation, and it was proven it was within hours.
Now, are you confusing the auto-squelch with the silence penalties that were implemented? Or are you still claiming that the auto-squelch was not a thing prior to this date and especially not for over 10 years?
I, nor were the endless amount of trade trolls back on my server in Wrath (which entire guilds would report) were never squelched.
I am glad to see that the penalties we are in agreement on on the release, but if you have auto-squelch info from Wrath, even just a screen shot, please inform about it, because during the course of this topic I have looked through my screenshot folder to back then and have found nothing save individual players ignoring.
I’ve been holding off as the people that are primarily against the auto-squelch keep informing us that Classic and Modern WoW are completely different games, and that there’s significant reason to abuse the auto-squelch in Classic that doesn’t exist in Modern WoW.
Well, the same reasons they give for it possibly being abused in Classic, would definitely apply to The Burning Crusade as well. There was no automated group finder or raid finder in TBC.
Wrath didn’t have those until a later point (3.2 I think, possibly 3.1). Wrath began the trend of changing a lot of things, Cata put it in to max gear though.
The argument people against silence are making is because of that very reason it will be devastating to classic (which requires far more social interaction and teamwork). The problem is not being silenced for spewing filth or even that you can right-click report, the problem is that it’s an automated process.
You know, in truth, none of us really know. Who knows if it’s futile. Who knows if it’s working. Blizzard hasn’t said anything outside of that old Ythisens post saying it was an interesting discussion or something.
It doesn’t really matter what anyone has said in this thread if you’re looking for direct proof if it is or isn’t. All that matters is if Blizzard says it will be in or out. And we may not find out until it releases.
