This sort of thing is actually not as uncommon iRL as you’d think. I know she gives a little justification speech about how she’s learned to manage just as well as anyone, but she’s fooling herself. It’s fear talking.
Having a major disability is scary! You lose a limb or some sort of body function, and it’s legitimately frightening trying to cope. You feel helpless. Over time you adjust; you get used to your prosthetic and you learn to manage without that function. The thing that was scary becomes routine and normal, and once that happens it ceases to be frightening.
The thing about a new prosthetic, or a new and improved one, is that suddenly your disability isn’t routine and normal any more; you’re learning a new and unfamiliar way to manage it even if that way is superior, which makes it frightening again. This doesn’t make much logical sense but our emotions don’t care.
Not everyone reacts in this way, but it’s not uncommon to have to cajole people into upgrading their artificial leg or hand to a better version. Truthfully I thought it was a nice touch to show she’s not perfect by any means.
Because there’s never been anyone even with all their limbs who had someone assist them in armoring up, especially not to the point that it’s a common scene in media used to have a scene to convey feeling about the upcoming battle.
Oh we all do, but it will take a while for the “girlboss” ( I don’t really like the term, but it fits) phase to go away.
It’s the same thing as adapting to new technology, whether you’re disabled or not.
People get too comfortable. But it should be easier for younger people to adapt, and Faerin seems fairly young.
After some talking, she might be able to accept it quietly.
You are aware that not every disabled person wants to have a prosthetic right?
She lost her limb when she was a kid. Learned to do everything all over again with one arm. And she’s proud of that and doesn’t want to relearn everything again. Its her body so its fair of her
So where exactly did this idea that Faerin is rejecting super magic perfect prosthetics come from? Because from my memory of the scene the blacksmith is iterating on a design which has not involved testing it, and that prior examples were uncomforfable/painful in use (don’t remember exact phrasing there) Didn’t sound to me like it’d be a perfect replacement, but something equivalent maybe to some more modern ones but mechanical.
That is fine… I would of liked it if they gave her a spear or something rather then a shield that simply can’t work the way its presented. This is just speaking to the character design.
To be fair, being disable and the state of mind it brings. It is hard for many people to understand that from a story point. Like having a prosthetic arm seems like a better option than not for most people I think. To go deeper into why she does not, I think tons of people would not really care or think twice on.
The guy using the gun is from a work that was made and allowed to be enjoyed before a buncha wangrods decided to turn nerdy entertainment into a culture war and pretend to be upset about the same kinda stuff that happens in movies they loved before.
