Essences seem to be designed for mains, basically. It’s a way to progress a particular character’s power in various types of content.
It may be that most wow players actually do focus on one character most of the time. This is something that would be easy to see based on data, so it’s not like the devs would be in the dark about this. Some dev comments in the past have suggested that this is so.
So the idea is probably more to create a progression for that type of player, a reason to participate in various types of content, and to allow for character development other than gear.
Players who want to swap out of ton of characters may actually be a minority, but it’s quite a few of the most dedicated players.
That’s true, and it’s fine to a point. There should be some benefit to focusing on a main.
But I still think that alt swapping is a pretty major factor for what makes the game enjoyable over extended periods of time for a lot of people.
That’s why I think that allowing rank 2 to be unlocked on the account would be reasonable, leaving rank 3 and the cosmetic rank to be earned on individual characters for players who want to invest the time.
So your alt isn’t as powerful because RNG has been working against you. That means if f RNG was working in your favor the argument would be that your alt got more powerful than your main.
I’m not missing the point, you are.
Your alt will never be as powerful as your main. Ever. Even if you got RNG lucky twice your main will have weeks upon weeks of RNG.
Additionally with the way the cloak Powers up with resistance your alt will not be able to wear as much corruption or have as a high level cloak.
Essences are an old rental system. A lame power grind when there are already 2-3 new ones to do. It’s blizzards chronic habit of making people go back and do old content because they’re afraid people like you will unsub. Well bfa is doing just swell so hopefully they rethink it. Making people go back and do old boring content multiple times is the best way to convince people to go play something actually fun.
“I got proven wrong so I’m going to go after the person rather than admit it.” This character has been my main for over a decade. Of course it’s going to have achievement points. My account wide achievement points are even more.
Doesn’t change the fact Essences are a massive part of DPS and need to be account wide.
Wrong. Completely and utterly wrong.
I could get lucky on an alt and get 2 rank 3 Infinite Stars/Twilight Devastation corruptions and my alt would be vastly superior to my main even 20+ ilvls lower and no essences. With essences it wouldn’t even be a question.
You’re vastly over exaggerating luck. Your alt may get a 445 with rank three stars. Do some mad damage. Your main with all of its RNG drops will have the same rank three stars on a 465+ item. Your alt will never be close to your main.
Additionally a new player will be completely boned. Unless you want this game to completely die off you need new players. Forcing them to grind obsolete content for current power levels is a sure way to make sure that doesn’t happen.
My alt got lucky with the Tortrollan weekly; I got the Heroic Feral weapon from Nyalotha and a r2 twilight devastation, 3 days after reaching max level. My main hasn’t got any of the good affixes after 2 months into the patch, they’re almost equal in power now.
I love how the people against BoA essences are constantly trying to derail the conversation when they get called on the pettiness of their arguments against such a thing.
Just saw that video. Maybe hearing it from players that are much better than them will finally let it sink in for these naysayers. Even timestamped it since I’m nice like that:
Pretty much. “You don’t want alts, you want multiple mains” - No. We want alts actually capable of joining M+ and Normal/Heroic Pugs, or be able to swap them in for our guilds when needed.
Something we’ve been able to do for 15 years, but suddenly they decided to do everything to prevent it with Essences.
And do not tell me alts could not be played in Vanilla. I ACTIVELY played 3 toons in Vanilla. 4 in BC, and 10 in Wrath. It was more than possible. And I had LESS time back then, as I was still in School AND playing Final Fantasy 11.
My favorite part of the anti-BoA Essence crowd is literally none of their arguments make sense. The dude above literally quoted me saying “You’re exaggerating luck” as a reason for why an alt might end up outgearing a main due to corruption.
