Employees leaving Blizzard due to RTO

A huge market for Photogrammetry clean up. They can make a better living working in a different environment that is for sure.

Waiting over 6 hours in the “emergency” room when I had insurance but even urgent care was closed doesn’t make me feel like I have an advantage under the US system.

That is normal in the US ER too. Esp for something really little like stitches. You could be there forever. We have Urgent Care walk in clinics though that are for common but “right now” type stuff that is not life threatening. So getting stitches means an Urgent Care usually, not the ER. Coverage on that depends on your insurance. In the US we avoid the ER at all costs if we can. They are insanely expensive and often the care is not covered by insurance because it is “out of network”.

Premiums of $500-600 a month are standard if paid out of pocket. Even if the employer subsidizes it on their plan, you still pay a couple hundred a month usually for it. More if you have a family on it.

It depends on your employer and your plan. I paid LESS on ACA marketplace insurance and got a much better plan than my California based company had for us.

I am now on Medicare, but even that is not free. It comes out of Social Security I would otherwise get.

That is terrifying! I am glad you are ok, that sort of infection can kill people.

If that’s the case, I’m guessing the Blizzard stuff will become just a mini event offered as a sideline sort of thing.

I have mixed feeling about the merger. I’m concerned the Blizzard end will be marginalized, yet M$ is by far better equipped to handle the infrastructure, and will be able to get things done much faster and more efficient, as M$ doesn’t bother with all the political/squabbling crap. They will see it almost solely as a business thing, and they will ram stuff right through, without all the politics that have really bogged Blizzard down over the last few years.

I suppose if they do do a dedicated Blizz event, it will be amazing, as they will have more resources to work with.

It’s significantly cheaper for someone to visit our Diabetes Nurse every couple of weeks than it is for them to get parts of their foot chopped off because they don’t manage it.

Ill still go but will feel weird seeing such a once-great event on the side of a pool in La Quinta Inn, next to a DJ playing 90’s old school music =(

Every state that I’ve worked in prohibits doing that. It’s also been one of the things I’ve heard managers being a bit salty about. They can do it, but if caught there are legal repercussions.

About all they can say about you on the record are things related to your attendance. I doubt that it’s followed like it should be though.

Correct. It’s expensive to be poor in the US. No dental insurance for regular cleanings? Enjoy maybe getting a tooth pulled or a root canal.

No amount of “but there is a cost” to universal health coverage that’s being said in this thread will be worse than HAVING NOTHING. Even though these are people still being taxed!

Yup. I always liked Terry Pratchett’s explanation of it.

The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. I don’t think game dev is oversaturated. Data analysis and data science, recruiters, marketing are due to Meta, Google and other companies who were hording people. That being said those people aren’t competitive because they weren’t doing work the last few years.

Corporate decision making is rarely data-driven.

Corporations making big moves, like strong-arming people back into the office, are usually driven by personality politics and/or big spend on consulting dollars. If they spend $10M+ on consultants (or people claiming to be looking at the data) and they come back with “Go back to the office because everyone else is doing it” (regardless of what’s actually happening within the individual company), the company will not defy the consultant they just spent $10M+ on. That would be a “waste of money” and no member of management, especially at a C-suite, is going to back that decision. Ever.

In other words, what data matters, industry or individual. And it’s unlikely anyone is looking individually and just following what the Big Four and their banks are recommending. Those recommendations are making data, to drive “data-driven” decisions.

So all that job tracking, time sheets, billable hours, and every other metric for job performance that significant effort is put into is just ignored?

And for that matter, profit, that’s data that drives a lot of decisions…

FAANG companies are doing layoffs at the low and mid end because they colluded to overhire and lock up new talent and startups are collapsing because they had candyfloss valuations based on zero interest rates.

Software jobs that require competence and experience are still hiring and in fact are quite desperate for qualified labor. People with senior development chops are going to walk out of blizzard and into new jobs easily at a pay gain. That’s what happened to all the development talent that got pushed out of Twitter by elon for poor reasons, you may recall.

The layoffs only really crunched people doing low order jobs like customer support and data entry and user testing. Many of those people never got to WFH in the first place.

The only people hurt by blizzard demanding strict RTO is blizzard, and us their customers as they endanger the quality of their product.
