Bump, still crashing in DX 12 with 7900 XTX amd
7900 xtx here and i’m getting blackscreen/crashing with dx12 as well, I’m glad I found the cause of the problem. Reassured to find out I’m not the only one with these issues!
Sadly this issue has exist for many months now, and its only recently been noticed by blizzard on the forums. Not sure if it will get fixed this expac or not at the rate of updates we get on the matter.
New AMD driver today. New WoW patch too. Black screen a hangin’.
Tired of it now.
Yep, after today’s 23.12.1 Adrenalin driver I had the “not responding” appear when launching. I’m guessing the driver update reset the shader cache, and/or the new hardware accelerated GPU scheduling feature that it introduced required a reset of the shader cache. Either way, I let the game sit at the white screen for about 3 minutes and then it started working great, and I can confirm that subsequent logins happen perfectly. Like before, it’s just the first launch that hangs due it compiling the new shaders.
My Machine is now hard restarting from playing wow even after todays amd patch. guess im not playing till they get this sorted. They got a 6 month sub out of me so i gues they really dont care.
It is awful but you can still play , force DX 11 through launch options
latest amd driver 6900xt had to hang on a black screen for about 5 minutes but it worked.
Tbh I would just rollback and use one of the previous AMD drivers, and run the game in dx11 if youre still having issues in dx12. I know my friend(with an i9, not an AMD) just recently was having issues with his game crashing and he rolled back to early driver set and his problems seem to be fixed now.
issue is not driver related, it’s 10.2 related.
only “fix” is dx11, or dx12 but waiting 5min to launch the game after every game update.
Latest driver doesn’t work on DX11 7900XTX for me (Win11). I plan to roll that pc back to pre-Avatar/an earlier driver. 7800XT DX11 - Win10 works fine on 2nd latest driver. Might be worth avoiding the latest driver for some.
Blizzard in their wonderfulness messes up both Retail and Classic Era clients, dx11 works perfectly, Waiting several minutes works for dx12
Came here to comment, I just resubbed and I’m experiencing this too, game just sits on a black screen and doesn’t respond when I click my mouse. Setting to -dx11 does help, so something is definitely broken.
This only started occurring for me with the latest driver with AMD. Started as soon as I updated, was working fine just a few hours ago.
perfectly? no. it doesnt crash but dx 11 stutters and has bad fps compared to dx 12
Not entirely true though. I started playing SoD this week, without updating the driver. Had a crash on DX12. Updated my driver, thinking it was the old driver, then driver crashed again on DX12. Then i remembered the issue involves DX12 and swapped to DX11.
Unfortunate that this issue still persists with the high end 7000 series AMD cards.
Exactly, while I can technically play now on dx11 it plays awfully. It feels unplayable. I have a 7900xtx and have tried every fix. It’s clearly a WoW issue post the patches.
PSA if you simply leave the game running when it appears to be doing nothing after launching it, eventually it will launch and will be normal from then on, even after closing the game and shutting down. Works for me using 6800XT and DX12.
So, Blizzard just doesn’t care about this issue I guess?
Can confirm on Windows 11 23H2 with latest Adrenaline drivers WoW retail WILL switch to DirectX 12, you just need to be patient. I had to wait a couple of minutes after switching the graphics option before DX12 started. If Windows prompts you to close the program, don’t do it, just wait.
After that, restarts will continue to use DX12, and performance will continue to be waaaay better than DX11. At least in my experience, once it switches it is fast and stable. Hope it works for you too!
