DX12 Doesn't Work In 10.2

If you are using Render resolution below 100%, switch it to 100% that will restore the fps back to normal

Just adding my name to the pile and the thread of frequent driver timeout crashes on DX12. 7900xt. Fine in all other games.

I am glad you are having no problems. But, AMD is cheaper than Nvidia, which is why people get it.

Coming to a post to brag that your more expensive solution works, rather than providing a solution or anything useful, doesn’t contribute anything intelligent to the post.

NVidia cards are great, but just because a game has a bug on one, doesn’t invite one to brag about why their card is better. If you don’t have anything useful to contribute, just don’t say anything.

The fact that you don’t have an AMD card, and still posted here, shows that you came here for one purpose only. To be a toxic internet troll, becuase you have nothing better to do with your time than seek temporary validation online. I feel sorry for you.

Yeah I am timing out as well. Fortunately I am not receiving the blue or black screen of death like others. My client freezes, stops responding, and then times out and closes out completely.

I am on an older graphics card and computer but no heating issues that I have noticed.

I can’t play Retail or classic wow in DX12 On any of my AMD machines. The game just times out And shuts down the game. I do have a laptop that has a Nvidia 2080 And that’s running DX12 just fine
AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
RX 7800 XT
Win 11

10 Days since this post and over a month since the original report during the PTR.

Did you all go on break or something?

Visual fidelity is probably not on their list of priority fixes. Maybe we can make more noise about this on the 10.2.5 PTR forums.

Worked for me today on 7800XT. My 7900XTX (main rig) tried both Win10 and 11 weren’t working a couple days before patch so I’ve been on a 3060 12gb until I installed the new card -d3d11 works on latest driver for 7800XT in Windows 10 in my case. I’ve yet to retry the 7900XTX. PTR for 10.2.5 also worked 7800XT DX11 for me today (tried that first).

can confirm the issue.
running win11 22631.2715 on a 6800H laptop with driver 23.11.1.

game would hang for a long time (windows thought it was unresponsive and would constantly asked to close it).
switching to dx11 solved it, but doesn’t run as nice as dx12 used to.
i followed the suggestion in the thread and let it sit there for a while and the game finally finished launching. subsequent launches went perfectly normal as they used to.

i’m guessing the game hangs on 1st run because it’s compiling shaders…

Still facing issues.

Also getting this on my 6800 XT

edit:

After letting it sit for a while, it did indeed load, and subsequent loads are back to normal as they should be.

It almost feels like it’s a shader issue, where it’s compiling shaders at the login screen, which causes the freezing until everything loads. Small patches are probably resetting the shader cache. Counter-Strike 2 had some shader compiling issues on AMD when it launched a month or two ago. Every patch would reset the shader cache and cause stuttering until everything compiled again.

So I uninstalled all instances of wow but I copied my old W T F folder. With the settings set to D X 12. When I reinstalled I copied the old WTF folder back into the game and it booted up just fine but crashed about five minutes later So I had to go into the text files and change the api to dx11 Now it’s working just fine. When I reinstalled classic I just copied and pasted that WTF folder and it worked Right away.

I think We’re suffering from two problems here
1 when the game first starts it has trouble Creating That original W T F file
2 The game does not like DX12 On some amd cards

definitely not my issue, the game ran fine in 10.1.7 and before.
no changes were made on my end, i simply updated to 10.2.

Actually DX12 works fine. Open the game and give it 3-5 minutes to load. Any time you open the game after that it opens at it’s regular speed.

Any update on this?

Nah they’re just telling people to use dx11, which has it’s own issues.

I just bought a 7800 x3d and rt 7900 xtx, having a lot of memory error and game closing during this raid, happened 4 times yesterday in fyrak heroic fight.
After this weekly reset things gone even wrong

Yeah, using DX11 being the solution is pretty terrible. The performance difference is easily noticeable. I get its not something they can fix overnight but it makes the play experience definitely worse.

I would rather deal with worse performance than randomly crashing in M+ runs but a fix would be even better.

Is this confirmed, or a joke? Every time I open the game in DX12, it instantly freezes up until I tell it to “end the task”.

Edit: I can confirm that what Babyface suggested is genuine and works. I opened the game, set it to DX12 and it predictably froze. I went away to do a boring house chore, and when I came back, the game was fine. I’m in the Emerald Dream as I type this; no performance issues either.
