THAT is exactly the charm of this game and what makes it very different from others that try too hard to look ‘real’.
Theyve managed to take ‘cartoony’ and in more recent expansions actually give it a contemporary feel.
If I wanted to play ESO…to look at those graphics,…Id go play ESO. Its a better game mechanically…and the professions are 1000x better.
Its WoW’s graphics and races that keep me playing it.
For what it’s worth, I don’t think CPU/GPU performance has anything to do with FF14’s art style. Of course, render times are important, but WoW has been unique for two decades, and I couldnt tell you the difference between FF14 and BDO if I just look at random screenshots. It’s not to bash FF14, it just that FF14 doesnt sell itself to me. In a word, it can be quite generic.
The real-time cinematic tech they used this expansion was kind of nuts though. While the Garrosh cinematic was made by a single dev on short notice, the same tool was used in the 9.2.5 cinematics that looked pretty much pre-rendered.
Engine might be old, but this engine has a lot of mileage remaining if it could pull that off.
Eso has great dungeons and the voice acting is definitely top notch.
The combat is what prevents me from playing it in large doses.
Games like eso or dcuo are just spammers with weaving in clicks.
Some people like it and say that’s the skill requirement, but for me, the combat feels weightless and super clunky.
I’ll never be a fan when I have a blend of multi attacks being stuck in weird animations because of all the cancelling and just a screen full of numbers… makes me feel like I’m just rubber banding the whole time.
Why is this news? When Endwalker was right around the corner, everyone was screaming from the rooftops that it was destroying WoW because everyone was talking about it.
Now with Dragonflight coming up soon, everyone’s talking about that instead.
Turns out that when one game is gearing up for a new expansion while the other is late in a season content drought, the game that’s actually doing something is going to get more buzz. Why are people constantly surprised by this? MMO popularity is not static and constantly fluctuates. Yet people keep trying to use individual snapshots in time to compare two MMOs.
This is pretty vague, but when it comes to texture quality, at least, yeah, FFXIV is typically behind. “Design”? Idk.
WoW has solid models, but with everyone looking the same despite them occasionally adding a handful of extra options.
FFXIV has worse models, but their art style hides it very well, and their expressiveness is 1000% better, which makes up for a lot, and customization still wins, since you can do more than swap some hair and colors and such.
WoW has always won here, tbh. FFXIV zones tend to be VERY flat. The zone that got the most praise in Endwalker was literally some 100% flat platforms with grass and flowers slapped on.
Eh. Very subjective. FFXIV tends to win by default due to actually being 3D though, and I don’t see that changing for DF.
I came back to say FF14 has more players than WoW at this point, WoW will never be at the top again, not with how awful this community is towards other people either, the slime cat ordeal should shed some light, and give you the exact reason why.
I totally agree. I miss SWG so much. Better housing, better crafting, player cities, the pre NGE class system. SO much better than this lazy garbage we have now, but its the only garbage we do have.
I was hoping SWTOR would have a lot of the old galaxies class systems but fnaaa. They do have housing though and I think blizz should really kick themselves for not adding it.
Imo some people don’t consider themselves “gamers”, they consider themselves a “xxxxx” mmo player (insert your favorite mmo).
For myself, I’m in my mid-30’s, have a family and work more than 40 hours a week.
My time gaming is only optimized on one thing and that’s having fun while I have the time to play.
If one mmo isn’t doing that for me, we are fortunate that we have a market that has some competition and I’m fortunate that my favorite two ip’s are going strong.
Not sure why it matters which game someone thinks is better. It’s a game. Play what you like. I mean it’s such a weird thing. If “your game” is better than what you think of the game I like to play…what reaction should I give to that? “Cool bro Umm …neat? So I’m gonna play my game now. Bye “
