I didn’t get my first smartphone until 2015 (lol), and I still remember being in the Verizon store and going back and forth between a Windows Phone and a Galaxy S5. Obviously went with the S5.
After my disappointment with the S21+, my next phone is going to be a flip phone again. I miss it.
which is why I dont have much as far as the OS except for windows. I keep these machines as bare bones as possible. My mom is a good example of clicking “OK” and not paying attention. Her machine is always hosed with malware and viruses lol. Shes been ripped off, had her bank account hacked, like half a dozen times because she refuses to keep her AV running and updated and does her banking on her devices.
We have Win 10 and AV software along with my design software and some games. Thats about it.
Three 1TB drives in each rig and most of it is free, lol
mine was an S2 lol. was with US Cellular at the time, and their phone selection sucked. what i really miss, are the physical keyboards… my fat thumbs are not conducive with touch screen keyboards.
its funny you mention the S21, i just bought a refurbed S21 Ultra (gets delivered later today), tho im coming from a Motorola Stylus (2019), so im sure its gonna be a huge upgrade. almost got a Pixel 6 Pro to degoogle, went back and forth between those 2 for weeks.
S21 isn’t bad. It just felt like a huge downgrade from my old S9+ (which imo is the best smartphone ever made). Then again, I’m not the type to stream movies and crap on my phone, so maybe that’s why I don’t get it.
I wish there was a phone as reliable as the flip phones that had the features I need from the smart phones…GPS mostly.
The phone I have now has been my favorite of all of them, but its old enough now that Im looking to get it replaced and the updated one seems a bit fishy.
i really dont either, for a time when the Joe Rogan podcast was live, id stream that to my phone. otherwise i use it as a phone and texting. the Ultra i got for the camera and im gonna try and use that more, plus it being a little less than half the price of new currently, i went with the refurb… hope its not a dud.
I’ll have to check that out. thanks!
I have to have GPS and the traffic thing if only for the traffic. gotten stuck in traffic for HOURS here over some idiot causing a pile up. Theres 3 or 4 other ways around but I never know which one will be backed up if I dont have google maps.
I’ve been using the standard old Win10 Home for a while now. Regular install, nothing extra. I have never once had a pop-up ad. I am the kind of guy who will meticulously go through all of the settings and turn off notifications and anything else that runs in the background. Have you looked through all system settings, OS settings, etc…? Or are you the type of individual that gets a new rig and you’re “off to the races” (not that theres anything wrong with that!)
EDIT TO ADD: Upon first upgrading to 10, I immediately turned off the weather, did not link my email to the notifications, disabled the little news ticker…all of it. I understand a lot of people like to have that stuff right there on the screen for convenience. If thats the case, then yes, ads will come with.
And no! I’m not at all accusing you of lying. Never said that. In fact, I asked a follow up question and offered a possible solution. I know you’re getting blow back here, but not from me…deep breath, friend.
exactly.
Im 110% for having a cell phone just for emergencies. The wifes tire blew out years ago on the road. Up till we met she refused to have a cell phone. I talked her into taking my old one just for MY peace of mind. Sure enough, within a few weeks shes miles from home, tire blows out and she has no one to help. She calls me and I go fix it.
Everyone who can afford to should have a cell…even if its one of the gophones that you dont have a monthly bill but charge it and pay by the minute, for emergencies only.
I think, if they still have them, there was one that was $2 a month flat, and if you used it it was by the minute charges, but it was only for emergencies.
Maybe if you could find something like that?
I just hate when good people are stuck out somewhere without a phone.
Read my edit above. Wasn’t attacking you at all. Clearly you didn’t read beyond my first sentence. I was explaining to you what I did to not have ads. Just trying to be helpful. No where did I call you a liar, I was trying to be helpful.
I think you are MISSING the point here.
I said I have ads. a couple of these people have pretty much accused me of either being a liar or said I DID something to CAUSE the ads…when Ive shown a list of links as PROOF that Win 10 comes with the problem pre installed.
No, I havent done much to do anything about it. MY POINT was that it DOES happen, and some corks popped in this thread because I dared to say something ‘mean’ about precious MS’s product having ads in it.
Whether I did anything to stop it or not isnt the issue or the point. The ads are there. thats what I said. Then a tirade of NUH UH" posts followed. lol.
Then they got upset that I gave proof in the form of linked articles about the issue.
The answer is no…I havent done squat with the settings. But I was also making a point about the ads, not tossing a fit over them. IF i were at fit tossing levels, yes, I would have done something about it.
problem with this forum is some in here NEED an enemy to combat…and Id rather add them to the ignore list than listen to it every day.
I figured not, but wanted to ask lol. That seems to be the method around here when they dont like something youve said. It gets annoying and I used to spend the day fighting with them, but its just easier to make a point, repeat it a time or two and if they persist, just add them to the list and not have to deal with it all day. lo.l
thanks for your advice and help in the matter. Much nicer to see someone offer help without getting pushy and obnoxious to the point…or accusing of lying, etc…so we can just talk without the drama and I dont need to add more to the list.
Never upgrade to a new OS right away. Best to wait 2 to 3 years for all the bugs and driver issue iron out. Also Win 11 needs to have some hardware security first which a lot of PC don’t have so they can’t even upgrade to Win 11.
This is not a surprise. Almost everyone is on your ignore list. You probably switched from Rahkeetahp to this character after you ran out of room to ignore everyone that calls you on your screaming.
It is amazing to me that someone of your age can act so unhinged.
You did not even read the rest of his post.
He rarely does. He would rather fight and scream.
No one accused you of anything. You merely told that these things are adware that can be disabled and that the rest of us do not have this issue, so it is obvious you have something enabled that we do not.
Perhaps you should stop acting as a child for someone of your age.
And now I shall add you to my ignore list. You get back what you deserve. Good riddance.
my problem is I can’t upgrade to it because I don’t have TPM enabled and I don’t know how to enable it. I poked around in the bios but didn’t see it, and I know that I don’t know what I’m doing in there, so don’t want to change settings I’m not completely sure about. I’ll have to ask my brother about it.
