I just roll Need on everything, regardless of whether I need it.
If it’s not an upgrade, afterwards, I’ll inspect the next highest roller and see if they need it. If not, I’ll move to the next, etc. etc.
That’s just how I roll. (pun intended)
Can you explain the hypocrisy in the case where it’d be an upgrade for both? I can definitely see this if it’s not an upgrade for the person complaining.
I do dabble in addons, and was considering making one of those for myself. Just to make things easier for me, personally. It’s a shame I can’t hook directly into the armory for those that like to hide what they actually own.
This is only hypocritical if Need was intended for the biggest possible upgrade. It’s not. It’s intended for “an upgrade”.
If the need button is there, I roll need. I don’t even look at the item.
It’s clear that others are inspecting, though. I had a mage RAGE at me last night for winning two side-grades from one wing of LFR. I then gave both of those items to another mage for whom they were an upgrade, because he didn’t open his mouth.
i need everything and if i get something i dont need ill give if someone asks for it
if im with friends we will need on stuff to get each other upgrades
guild runs are different and depend on the guild. i dont regularly guild raid anymore but there are 2 guilds i sometimes help out
If it’s really minimal and other people need I may inspect and check to decide how even of footing we are on. I also have my own moral compass for if they have been a good or bad player in the run, or if they (or I) have been winning a lot of loot. I get really annoyed when someone has been winning all the drops and the first time I can roll on an item they still roll and win.
Broadly speaking big ticket items, like weapons or trinkets, I’m probably all in regardless, but other slots I’ll back off if the situation calls for it.
Need has never been defined by Blizzard, but whenever automated systems have had control for when you are allowed to roll on a drop it’s been regulated by some logic along the lines of having an equip-use basis.
If we just accept that any use can be defined as need then everyone can roll on everything because you can always vendor it for gold. Mages can roll on 2H swords, DKs can roll for healer trinkets, etc. Everyone needs gold, or maybe you can use it as a bargaining chip to trade with someone else later. Or shard it. At this poin the concepts of need or greed becomes completely irrelevant and the words are meaningless.
What people yet annoyed with is when someone takes loot for transmog over use. I don’t see threads where people are annoyed someone took a 5 ilevel upgrade when it was 10 for them.
Not quite true. We know what allows the Need roll.
“You may only roll Need on an item if your class can equip it and it is considered an upgrade. Having a certain item equipped or in your inventory will prevent you from rolling Need on that item if it is the same item level or lower.”
But we can also infer the intent, with regards to Greed, DE, and Transmog.
Greed and DE are easy – one cannot roll Need on an item that one cannot equip, even though they are vendorable and/or disenchantable. Thus, “Greed” and “DE” are not “upgrades”.
For Transmog, it’s a bit trickier:
It’s also possible Blizz is an inconsistent and lazy company, since they don’t really care to respond to any of these, clear them up, or fix transmog rolls.
Yes I look to see who is winning the roll before I make my decision to roll. If they need it badly and it’s a minor upgrade for me or a sidegrade/situational item, I will generally not roll. If it’s a killer LFR transmog I was after, I will still roll however. I’m not completely selfless I just try to be generally aware of others’ experience as well.
