Do you believe in the soul?

not entirely different, but the style itself is a bit different
the latin one has hymms in latin, which are meant to be…silvery, as a sound
quite pleasing

the orthodox ones are like…they say a few words in a normal voice, then they start singing. then speaking, then singing.

there is also this ritual at Easter where you go to the church to “get the holy light”.
basically you go with a candle, and you get light from other candles, which got light from the big candle, which apparently got the light from jerusalem or something.

if ever you wanna see people acting like kobolds in real life, that’s where you need to be.
they are literally pushing and huddling to get that light, and make sure it doesn’t get extinguished by the wind, until they get home with it and set the candle on the table.

imagine people lighting each other’s hair on fire in the commotion, all those open flames

That’s not what I mean by perception. I mean the ability to see through our own eyes. Not what we see. The fact that you are you and nobody else. What is that? That can’t ever be altered. Except potentially at death it just stops. But it doesn’t stop even when we sleep. Even when our personality changes. Even when we forget things. Our point of view remains the same. Or do you truly believe you are not the same being with the same PoV as you were when you were a child?

My wife goes to the Baptist church near by from time to time, but I just can’t do it. I love everyone, but I just don’t have an ounce of faith. I’ve seen the horror movies, and I don’t want what’s waiting for me under that roof! /grin

Roman Catholics have Candlemass, which is similar but minus all the frenzy.

We do that in Catholicism at Christmas, which is why/how we light the advent candles on our wreaths. Lent/Easter we focus on ashes, we put palls on our alters and respect the silence of death, persecution, suffering.

I never could manage to stay awake to go to midnight mass on Christmas to see what that was all about.

Oh man. When it’s amazing it’s mind bending. But mostly it’s a snooze fest.

Nah.

I think the concept of oneself is purely a construct of our own brains.

Outside of our bodies, we don’t exist, at least in my opinion.

Your conscious self is your brain, and everything attached to it, nothing more.

And yet god could stop it from happening. God is omnipotent yes? God invented sin yes? God could snap his fingers and no more sin, no more hell. He choose to allow humans to suffer. Even in death.

you have summoned Vennz again
prepare!

There is a lot of candle stuff in Wicca as well, lots of spells require setting your intention while you light a candle and then you burn the candle all the way down to complete it. But it’s funny because it’s not as strict/protective of making sure it stays lit, it’s just a sign from the universe that maybe it’s not the right time for that spell/intention. Or you can even extinguish the candle if you feel like it and light it again later to keep casting the spell.

That can be said about most things in life. And on that note it is way past the point where I should be abed. I hope this thread survives the night so I can read what gets posted once I’m logged off.

Oh, yeah. Religion deals in belief. Science deals in proof. It going “both ways” is implicit in the original statement.

Back in 95’ I was living in Augusta GA. A friend of mine ended up taking a drum machine of mine on tour with James Brown as his guitar player. He brought it back to me 7-8 months later with a handful of posters from their European tour.

JB was born and raised in Augusta. He also has a Street named after himself. It’s a small piece of history that I am proud to be a part of.

I have a piece of gear that toured Europe with James Brown.:smirk:
