But if random BG’s are supposed to be casual, supposed to be for gearing, and don’t provide the best available gear…
…why not? If the core aim is to just get people to play, why not?

Because participation trophies are bad.
How is this debate still going. Random BGs are intended to provide starter PvP gear. Therefore people with crap gear are supposed to queue in them. That is the design! Anyone who disagrees or does not like it can take it up with Blizzard.
They do not do this, that is why the whole system is broken and needs to revert to a system where this worked (i.e. before Legion).
The PVP gearing system is to blame, not the people trying to do random BG’s for fun.
They do though. Rated is where you get the better gear.
Nah just deplete a +15 and score gear, can turn up with a team complete hammered trying to get each other killed and fail miserably and still get loot.
Not gonna be as quick in SL.
How so? I get a lot of 425 pieces and my wife who just leveled up her Hunter is getting pieces. Between the random BGs, WQs, and assaults she is gearing up at a decent rate. I did not PvP in WoD so not familiar with the system then.
Yea, you can casually gear up in multiple ways. People look at gear that mythic dungeons give but that’s not the only way to gear up for some randoms. It’s the fastest, sure but not the only way.
Casual competition is for fun, not rewards.
If you want gear rewards, we have a bracket where you can compete for that plus more, like every other sport in the world.
WoD gearing in PVP was done fast. Over a weekend, if you played a bunch you could have a full set of honor gear for PVP, alongside a piece or two of conquest gear.
PVP gear had it ilvl boosted in PVP so it was better than PVE gear for PVP.
Honor gear was only 15ilvl below the BiS conquest gear for PVP. Conquest gear was not gated behind rating either.
All of this gear was earned in PVP and did not require PVE to get and PVP gear was the best for PVP.
In BfA, Your 425 gear is 50-60 ilvl below BiS gear and all the BiS gear comes from PVE. Also your 425 gear likely does not have the right azerite traits, you don’t have the essences you need, and none of the useful corruptions. So, in short, your 425 gear is really, really bad compared to what people can earn in PVE for the same amount of time.

It was an amazingly fun and fair gearing system for PVP.
Why not both?
You’re not getting the best gear, just stuff better than the welfare blues you get normally.
Yeah, during WoD it was both, and super fun.
I mean, BGs were just as lopsided as now. Lots of players starting out later in the season/alts/pve’ers starting out after their pve runs were done later in seasons. The only thing wod had for them was gearing, but Legion had better matched BGs by a long shot.
The scaling in WOD ensured that everyone at least played from a base line, and you could gear in a hurry if you wanted.
The scaling didn’t kick in until a certain ilvl which wasn’t a brand new max level player. Bgs were just as lopsided in that expansion as now.
Wow yeah that system was designed correctly! Shame they did not stick to it.
This is the first time you actually said something using your prefrontal cortex.
WOD had some broken trinkets at end game but nothing comparable to corruptions and the Heart of Azeroth.
Corruption is really the only broken thing about BfA. The heart/traits/essences can all be obtained through pvp (unless you are going for essences through other means.) But really, for random BGs, you can use the pvp essences. Only the top ranked arena players/rated BGers really have to min/max.
