Do Kids actually enjoy the Rap Music of today?

No…hip hop is doing the best it ever has actually.

I was not like that either. It is a common teenage sentiment though.

Well maybe if they’d stop mumbling we would

I blame it on age and greed. They collectively agreed when making the Black Album that songs should be 3-5 min long because they were losing the endurance for the 7-9 min songs at concerts.
And by moving over to hard rock, they can appeal to a larger audience and sell more albums. Now that money is made more from concerts vs. albums, they are going back to playing their old school metal songs because that’s what people will pay to see.

One of the best rap albums ever. And modern hip hop is just fine

im 50 50 about it op i like some but i also hate others.

No. Good new music in every genre is released regularly, whether you like classical music, rap, house, country, or whatever.

If you just listen to satellite radio or “WRAP 98.8” then you’re not really hearing everything that’s available; you’re hearing the music three (count 'em - Universal, BMG, Sony) music companies want to promote. There are no other “major” record labels anymore. Not for about a decade.

You’re missing out on the hundreds or thousands of smaller labels releasing rap that you have to seek out yourself. The excellent stuff that never gets noticed or picked up.

Also, subjectivity is a thing. No, hip-hop isn’t really funk- or sample-driven anymore, but the style appeals to many. Witness the fact that hip-hop is now the most popular music in the US, surpassing country by a fair margin.

Is Public Enemy dope? Sure. But A$AP Rocky’s pretty good too. Anderson.Paak is an excellent lyricist. Kaytranada is a mind-blowing producer. If you’re a fan of hip-hop but you haven’t heard anything good in years, try changing your listening habits.

For starters, try some college radio. KCRW is world-renowned for their selection of new music, specifically, when it comes to hip-hop, the music that Garth Trinidad plays:

Just let them be kids. Let them love whatever they want to love you can’t stop that. No one told you old boomer music was bad when you were young did they?

I agree! There’s still music coming out today that blows me away. It’s an art. The way they flow around a beat, the delivery, it takes skill.

That’s a great one. As is Tupac’s All Eyes on Me. And Dr. Dre’s The Chronic. I think those are my two favorites. I also love Warren G’s G Funk Era, but people always seem to laugh at me for that one for some reason

Well, only in 2019 can trent reznor get a CMA award for a song.

A last year ago I heard Drake won like 8 awards for his album and I was like “Never heard of him, but he must be good” so I got his album and that was the point where I decided that I was too old. Too too old…

I’m more surprised you haven’t heard of Drake, he’s not a new artist

without getting into sub-genres:

70’s was the best era for Rock
80’s for pop and metal
90’s for rap and country

He isn’t in my circle of normal music, but I am willing to listen to new things. So when I saw how popular his album was I figured I would give it a shot. It was a mistake, a bad bad mistake.

What album? Scorpion?

I no longer remember what it was called, all remember was that it was not at all to my taste.

Hey a rap thread

Do the Beastie Boys count? They’re more or less all the rap I listen to.

Remember when they were being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? MCA was dying of throat cancer and I recall seeing a bit on some mainstream news that he couldn’t make it to the induction because he was too ill. With the contextual double meaning I simultaneously chuckled and made myself sad.

I feel really bad for Generation X. Everyone seems to have forgotten them and jump from the Boomers to Millennial.
