Did you guys like the new Lord of the Rings show?

Because they cast non-white people. To the “anti-woke” crowd, that’s an unforgiveable offense.

more than usual number of black people.

I’m starting to see it that way too.

Only thing I can possibly think of people perceived as “woke” is the fact there was some casting choices for non-white people. Which I find quite disturbing that triggered so many people. Wtf? The actors did great.

I liked She-Hulk and LOTR. I think they are both great. I don’t get peoples aversion to either.

It’s my perception that the story takes place after the Silmarillion so is more tied to the Akallabêth which was about the rise and fall of Sauron in the 2nd Age. I don’t have Prime at this point so I probably won’t see it but I’m not sure I’d want to. After what was done to Pratchatt’s The Watch, I fear it would be cringe.

The only other time I saw anything of Tolkien’s work on TV was Rankin-Bass’s animated version of LotR (they also did The Hobbit) which took over the 2nd half of the story after Bakshi butchered the first half with chintzy special effects. About the only thing I remember from Rankin-Bass is the song “Where there’s a whip, there’s a way”. I don’t think TV is an appropriate medium for Tolkien’s work.

I liked DS9 and Babylon 5 (at least through season 4), and the She Hulk series seems pretty humorous. Loki took some getting used to but it grew on me, and a few of the Marvel One-Shots are pretty funny.

Haven’t watched it yet, probably gonna wait until more episodes are released. Enjoying all of the people complaining about how the lore was butchered on here and in other places.

Sadly I know them too well, they’re predictable bunch.

Certain forms of media have whipped their viewers into a frenzy by convincing them that producers of popular entertainment are on some kind of war campaign to force them to accept social progress.

They aren’t necessarily racist, but they are the type of people to get mad about the idea of social progress, so like… it’s a venn diagram that looks suspiciously like a circle :man_shrugging:t4:

Exhibit A is below.

I’m not interested in woke films.

The thing I don’t really get is that even with the black and asian actors included in the new series, the cast is still 99% white. So I don’t get how anyone could feel there’s some sort of agenda or deeper meaning behind it outside of the fact maybe they wanted to give the audience more relatability? What’s wrong with that?

That’s the part they don’t like. They think it is “forced” and will affect the quality of the production in some way. Doesn’t matter how it comes across, any representation of minorities - be it racial or LGBT - is done for a shadowy agenda in their minds.

Ah ok. Was so hoping some gaming company would pickup the license for the LOTR rts games after EA failed to renew it. There were some fans/players of those old rts games, that remastered BFME themselves. But it is only for pvp mode. They didn’t remaster the campaigns last time I checked. Same with Star Trek Armada. Activision let that license go for those rts games. Who knows, maybe Frost Giant Studios will try, and grab some of those licenses, and remaster some of those games someday. The rts genre isn’t near what it used to be, but there is still a market for them imo. Frost giant is supposed to be making a new real time strat game. Hopefully it will be good. They are made up of former Blizz, and EA folks that have a passion for the RTS genre.

That’s so odd to me because when I look at it that way, you’d have to seriously be deep into the Kool-Aid. Even with what few ethnic / non-white actors there were, 99% of the cast is still white. There were no scenes from what I saw that I could relate to real world politics. To feel so threatened by 3 or 4 non-white individuals out of hundreds of other actors is quite disturbing to me.

Just sat through both so far. Visually, it was fantastic.

Story wise, it’s okay. Nothing to call home about. Plot wise. Still early. Although, it dies feels like they are going to bite off more then they can actually chew.
The set up between the two episodes feels like they are trying to copy and out pace The Boys’ Pulp character development and long con plot and action twists, instead of doing what LotR is known for, lengthy time and plot development with short action burst intervals that tie into each and every segment.

I’ll watch it eventually. I’ve ignored all reviews/spoilers thus far. Most of the headlines that keep popping up are about the culture war aspect anyway, which frankly isn’t worth my mental energy.

Either the show is good or it isn’t, but all the culture war criticisms are going to make it difficult to have any sort of real, honest, rational criticism/discussions about the series.

Humans: the reason why we can’t have nice things.

Oh that’s totally irrelevant. All of these judgements were made long before it came out, most of them before there were even any trailers. All they needed was the casting announcements to declare it “woke” and therefore ruined.

Having watched Babylon 5 in its entirety, barring like 1 movie, I agree on the special effects front.
The moment I saw those terrible, chunky renders I knew I was in for an absolutely fantastic time. And I was correct.

Yeah it’s okay

I vaguely similar stuff like this a decade ago.

Michael Bay announced he was making a live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but the turtles are aliens instead of mutants. There was a huge uproar from TMNT fans; now, looking back, it was a bunch of people making a big deal out of nothing. Like seriously, out of all the stuff happening worldwide, THAT is to be upset over?

Most people don’t remember the Bay TMNT controversy back in like… 2012.
So in like 7 years, this controversy over Rings of Power will be forgotten, and people will find something else to complain about.
