Dialogues missing in Shadowlands and BFA (text and spoken)

Any updates on this?

None of the workarounds cited here or in other threads work for me - enabling/disabling dialogue in the system settings does not enable the chat text, etc. - so I am also waiting for an update. I am basically suspending play until it’s fixed, missing too much stuff.

It’s getting fixed with patch 10.0.1. Probably means it’s going to remain broken until Pre-Patch.

Granted, the NPC dialogue working on PTR does NOT necessarily mean it’s going to work on live servers.

Where did you get that information?

Just downloaded a hotfix
problem still very much present. Sigh
I’m about to give up. Leveling alts in old contents I’ve seen over and over can only be fun for a short while

On the PTR, the dialogue for scenes like the Uther and Jaina conversation in Korthia actually work as intended.

I don’t know if it necessarily means that it will be true for the Live version of 10.0.1, though. Sometimes things work better on PTR than on Live.

This would be great and all, but do we even know when 10.0.1 is supposed to drop on live?

I gave up and suspended my sub until it’s fixed, no other real way to express my, uh, mild annoyance.

Probably in a month or two from now. It’s unfortunate that it’s looking like this is an issue that they can’t fix outside a major patch release, though.

Confirmed the bug is not present on the PTR, meaning they did squash it somewhere down the line, which makes it even more insulting that it’s still happening on the live servers. What gives? Ain’t like they’re still trying to find the solution! So infuriating

The only part about this that makes me skeptical is the fact that there wasn’t a patch release that caused this to break. In fact, season 4 had been active for over two weeks before the reports started coming in (nevermind the fact season 4 didn’t require a patch to start to begin with). Whatever they broke was likely a server- or client-side hotfix which they should be capable of changing again.

Interesting note about this, I’ve actually seen this bug before on past PTRs and assumed it was an artifact of the testing cycle. To see it last this long on live after appearing seemingly out of nowhere is really odd.

I think it’s odd too. I also find it unfortunate that this seemingly started when they were giving away SL. Bot the best way to welcome new or returning players.

The NPC dialogue was broken with the release of Patch 9.2.7. Shadowlands Season 4 started during Patch 9.2.5.

The earliest bug reports of this issue on Live servers were made after the release of 9.2.7, which was August 16, 2022.

In all likelihood, if it hasn’t been hotfixed by now, it probably means the issue isn’t fixable by hotfix and can only be fixed through a major patch release. Not sure what causes something to have to wait for a major patch release in order to be fixed, but they must have broken something that’s too big or too complicated to push through a hotfix.

Usually it’s mostly models and animation bugs that they won’t fix through hotfixes.

I just discovered something interesting. I was doing the introductory quests in Boralus and doing the quest The Old Knight to test if the bug was still present. On your way to meet Cyrus Crestfall you get a cutscene where Greymane arrives and Cyrus escorts him inside. Once you start talking to Cyrus, as usual you would see the character move and gesture as if he was talking, but no audio, no text.

Frustrated, I abandoned the quest while he was still « talking », and right away the audio and text started working again! I could hear almost all his speech. I thought that maybe the bug WAS fixed and I just abandonned the quest too soon, so got the quest again, started the same conversation and
. Nothing
bug was back. Abandonned the quest again while he was talking and the speech came back.

Can anyone else test that and see if that’s just me or maybe just this quest?

Just tried it with another quest (Searching for Answers) and same thing happened. A supposedly talking npc started working perfectly when I abandonned the quest while she was still talking. Sadly this doesn’t really makes this usefull as abandonning a quest every time just to hear a conversation would get tedious and frustrating but
maybe together, we can all come up with a real work around.

Can confirm - still happening. Are we seriously going to have to wait for the next expansion to be released before we can properly play the previous one? What kind of a service is this?

I confirm that the bug still exists. Several dialogue issues are still present in the Revendreth intro quest

Not sure if it’s a complete fix for any of the Stay A While dialogues, but when I start one and move a good distance away I get much more than just the last line of dialogue to play. Pretty sure I’m missing the first line or two, but player proximity to the NPCs may be a factor in the issue.

It’s just impressive how Blizzard didn’t fix this yet

It’s also sadly not useful for “Stay A While” dialogues, and while I managed to eventually hear every voiced line for a Shadowlands intro quest, it took several tries to hear everything and never once did it perfectly play every line in a single attempt at getting the dialogue working.

The method of keeping distance from NPCs doesn’t work. It’s completely random what lines will play other than the final line of the dialogue scene.

I’m seriously considering playing through story content on PTR first and then on Live servers after. Don’t know if it’s possible, but probably worth a try at least.

They’re apparently waiting until 10.0.1 to fix the dialogue issue.

I cancelled my subscription for now because of this issue. It’s been about three weeks now I think with no real communication.
