Wranduin is not goofy.
In response to the idea of developers working remotely, it’s important to consider that Blizzard may adjust salaries accordingly. Developers living in less expensive areas may have lower living costs, and the company could take this into account when determining wages. The focus would be on ensuring developers have the means to meet their basic needs, rather than providing a luxurious lifestyle. Consequently, it’s worth noting that working remotely might not necessarily lead to significant cost savings for employees.
Blizzard doesn’t even pay them enough to live near the Office and you want Blizzard to pay even less when they already pay at the bottom of the market?
No wonder all the real talent are swarming to Riot which has WFH options, better benefits, and way better pay.
It isn’t.
Yeah but that doesn’t fit the doom and gloom narrative that the OP is selling.
Ah yes almighty seer of things that actually don’t exist. There was never a release date until they announced it.
The person QUIT, they were not fired. There have been several long term Blizzard staff who were critical on DF who are now leaving Blizzard. None have exactly said why, but it is something related to a conflict with policy + finding other exciting opportunities.
The Twitter post is someone in a project management (producer) type role who is frustrated that the Suits and their policies are causing people to leave. People who are making the cool DF content that the producer wants to see us get our hands on.
Losing staff is never easy, esp when it impacts a project you love in critical ways. Having it be the result of management policies is even worse, because it makes you feel it could have been prevented if Mgt just listened to the workers.
It has NOTHING to do with the story or game decisions like that.
this is that guys fault not upper management. The managers who directly deal with the people need to train people to have reasonable expectations of the company and not to act like spoiled children who think everything they say and do should dictate the direction the company goes. This situation is the result of people being coddled.
I have to assume you are trolling. You can’t be that out of touch…
They left because their needs and expectations have changed. Blizzard no longer meets those needs. They found other companies that do. So their needs were quite realistic, and could be met, just not at Blizzard. That is not a lower level project/producer decision. Nor should someone tell workers to accept crappy work conditions without looking for, or advocating for, something better.
People have the right to seek employment that meets their needs and allows them to have personal enjoyment in life. Balance is important. Right now unemployment is near all time lows and workers can find something else if a company can’t meet their needs anymore.
Workers are not slaves who have to accept whatever a company throws at them. They can ask for better, and if it won’t happen, they have the right to quit. Sad for the team left behind, but that is life.
The only place in the US slavery is still legal is prison, and Blizzard is not a prison.
The “company” doesn’t exist without the people. You act like something on paper is real when it’s not.
The only reason Blizz is what it is is because of talent. They’ve been riding on the coattails of critical success for 20+ years.
It would do the management good to realize they require talent in order to succeed as a business. Investors aren’t everything and they will jump ship if things start trending downwards.
Shadowlands scared the s&$t out of Blizz, so they increased dev numbers, hired talent, made concessions with employees to make a better work environment, but as soon as they saw DF was a success and they got their money out of it, they start clawing back on all that.
Stop licking the boots of capitalism. God it’s actually disgusting.
haha so another marxist
Yes, please do just quit.
I was in management for over a decade and all I can say is I am very glad I never had this generation of people as employees.
Define “success” because they openly said it’s sales were lower than anticipated lol.
They invited this into their company.
Once it starts it rots your business.
Weird seeing communists argue about ‘keeping’ talent, but not ‘paying’ them.
We had wow in the work in office era and now the work from home era and I gotta say I much prefer wow in the work in office era.
Tech and game companies have been known for extravagant employee benefits and workplace perks to attract and retain talent since the dot-com bubble. Game rooms, beer taps, paid meals, pets at work, volleyball courts, gyms, sports medicine/massage, company events and outings, major swag for game releases and such. Game dev staff are nor orcs in mines eating dried worm biscuits.
This whole “back in my day” thing is nonsense - esp in the gaming industry.
Did people just plain forget everything or do they parrot some sort of odd talking point without looking it up?
Further, why would you want, or expect, people to accept being miserable to make a game you supposedly love and actively play given you have a Sub to it? I would think you prefer they attract and KEEP talent.
Losing people who have been there 10+ years is really not good. This has nothing to do with recent hiring, policies, etc. It has everything to do with long term staff not agreeing with current Mgt policies and moving on to greener pastures where they DO get the quality of work life they want.
I think if I was running a business now, I would only hire people on the right. The left seems to be having a marxist episode that isn’t compatible with good business.
I’m not talking about office perks.
More like this.
Just look at the people who are in the developer interviews for a new expansions and patches. If you invite a certain portion of the workforce who is more dedicated to activism than productivity, your company will be destroyed from the inside.
Oh, so you are talking about basic working conditions and pay? Things workers have a right to decide if they meet their needs or not. Don’t pay enough, don’t provide good basic working conditions, the staff member will leave for somewhere that does.
What are you on about?
Developers in Irvine make like $275k a year.
