I recently received some horrifying death threats from another player against myself and members of my family. I wanted to screenshot the chat log but after I reported the player the messages were gone. I’ve been a happy player since TBC, however, this behavior was really unsettling.
Has anyone else experienced death threats from another player unjustifiably?
What does Blizzard actually do to help in these situations?
If an employee could reach out to me… I’d really like to have those messages back for reference.
Did you give him your address? If not, you have nothing to worry about. It’s just like saying “I hope you get cancer.” People just vent sometimes. Not saying it’s a healthy way to express yourself but that’s the purpose of the ignore/report button.
An employee will not be able to reach out to you via the forums. Sorry.
If you are experiencing harassment in game, the best option are both the reporting and ignore systems.
If they continue to reach out to you, bypassing the ignore systems, then the next option is to reach out to customer support via the ticket system. You do not need to keep logs or screenshots, neither of those are taken. GM staff only use the in game logs to verify all reports.
If you feel the threat is credible, and the person knows you in real life, the next step would be to contact your local police. If it’s just someone blowing off steam in game and you don’t feel it is a credible threat, then the above options are the best way to go.
I would simply like to know what steps are taken to aim to reform this sort of behavior. It would be great if Blizzard were proactive in sharing with their community their stance on such extreme in-game social violence, and the consequences such players receive. I’d like to know that the consequences are enough. And if the entire community knew of them, perhaps more players would refrain from that behavior.
Some opinions place blame on video games for recent mass shootings. What does Blizzard do to assure their products are surely not contributing to the future of this epidemic.
Basically, it does what it can to teach the game rules, and hands out silences/suspensions as appropriate. There is only so much a company can do to change another person’s behavior though. Blizzard is a game company, not a police department, judge or penitentiary.
Yep, I’ve seen just about everything. It’s easy to pick out terrible people in real life, but in this game it’s a mystery as to who should be avoided. You just don’t know until it’s too late, you may become involved in a very negative incident or even have threats directed at you. It sucks and I wish it wasn’t that way.
FYI, Blizzard will NEVER share information with you about actions taken against another player’s account. It’s a privacy issue. And like others have pointed out unless you’ve given out your address or other information that would allow you to be found offline, there really isn’t much a person can do to you besides type random threats to you.
I some freaky person told me they would rape me, I was on a fem toon at that time ive had people who have said they would find and kill me as well, best to place them on ignore and than report them via a ticket.
