Dear Blizzard: The Void will never have the same appeal as the Scourge

The scourge is much less interesting than the void has the potential to be.

Sums it up nicely. It’s the corner stone of bad writing.

Blizzard continually introduces villains and concepts that are functionally identical story-wise to other concepts they’ve already used heavily. Instead, what you get is bargain-bin Scourge/Legion, the new writers inserting more stuff, that’s actually just-the-same-stuff.

“THE VOID” is literally a placeholder sounding name with no effort even put into it. It really just seems like the writing staff at Blizz has just given up, not that I care: the story in WoW has never been particularly strong and it’s been like a decade or more now of writing that trends towards consistently being awful.

No one expects Blizzard to put out Pulitzer prize winning story telling, but the writing, and whoever is conceptualizing this stuff is really scraping the bottom of the idea barrel.

There’s are a couple of types of “sin” or evil that can take you under. The undead represents being a carnal being likened unto a glutton irl (stitches) or mindless in the sense that they only desire to eat flesh or some other carnal pleasure. The void is more akin to taking way too much adderall and then smoking weed and suffering severe psychosis. (Literally going insane) each of these threats are different you just have to be smart enough to understand them

Technically even pointing out the rules is frowned upon if you’re not a blue.

It’s hardly a recast though. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
Nerubians were originally old-god affiliated & thus aligned with the void.

… If anything, them being Scourge was their recast :joy:

( Scourge → Void ) → Literally-anything-else → Maldraxxus *

Fixed it for ya.

I MOSTLY agree - though i would list this as Scourge>Voic>Maldraxxus. In my own opinion I found Maldraxxus a bit of a let down

Meh, to me, the scourge feels like the leftover stain of a fire that has pretty much burned itself out.

( and a reminder of an event I didn’t enjoy )

I’ve always thought of subterranean beings like how you described/referenced are a metaphor for the deep layers of the subconscious that people fear which are not immediately accessible. I kinda hope they make this expansion like an exploration of Azeroth’s darker side.

The Scourge aren’t cool because if you ever ran into them IRL they would most likely smell bad (although maybe that makes them relatable to Arthas/WotLK fanboys), and zombies are so boring compared to the stuff that void/old god stuff is based on (e.g., Lovecraft)

I’m pretty sure the whole reason for the zombie fad from years back is because zombie fiction is actually a form of escapist fantasy for a certain type of person. If you are a delusional right-wing prepper who is stockpiling guns and living off the grid like some weirdo, a zombie apocalypse scenario is basically one where you’re totally vindicated. This is why zombie apocalypse fiction makes me sick and I’m glad the trend is over and never coming back

Steve Blum did TFT Anub’arak. As well as Abathur in SC2/HOTS. Strange how he didn’t do Anub in HOTS as well.

Interesting take. I still like zombies a lot as they serve a metaphorical purpose which is why they’re such a long-standing archetype. It is also that kind of fantasy though you’re not wrong. Even Last of Us makes a shout-out to it.

When I think of “The Void”, nothing comes to mind.

Yay, puns!

I don’t know, I personally love the void stuff and Nerubians. I’m probably going to be happy with those story elements.

Hard disagree. The void is a wonderfully tantalising concept. Infinite, unknowable horrors are much cooler than zombies. Even zombies with a psychic overlord.

This is just a take from the void. The void is starting small until it grows out of control. Op is already corrupted and doesnt realize it. It’s easy to undermine a cosmic force that doesnt seem to do anything much. When it’s done right, no one is gonna know the void did anything at all.

More ppl die, the more that can be raised. And the ones that have been killed a 2nd time can still be raised again.

The story literally exlaims they are. Because we where dying and more was being raised. We even see that with saurfang jr becoming a death knight, showing they are raising our fallen.

There used to be effort put into it. It used to be a primal force, one of the most powerful cosmic forces that is all consuming. It desires to devour all, and if it cannot devour it, then it currupts, torture, and then bend it’s mind to it’s control in an attempt to have them bring more stuff for the void to consume. While the mind control could be fought against as seen in earlier expansions, the curruption was unstoppable. Until voud elves gotten the sl customizations.

So much for it being a primal force right?
