Just want to add my 2 cents… Played a troll shaman from BC to WoD.
This armor set is… just Meh.
The helm concept is ok, but poorly actuated.
The concept looks like a rezzed up version of the WC3 trolls, but without any real unique interesting style added. Like the NELF armor at least added to the fantasy. This set just feels like “there you go, Troll players, now you can stop complaining.”
Lastly, it actually reinforces the reality that after 20 years, Darkspear Trolls haven’t really had any progression of the races culture, only the story of Vol’jin as an individual Troll.
In other words, the identity of Darkspear only existed in Vol’jin’s identity, not in it’s people. Sadly, the Zandalari, an allied race, have more cultural personality than Darkspear. And to double down on this, the heritage armor is almost exactly like Vol’jin’s armor.
So not terrible, but not good either. just meh.
Last note about the legs and back. The armor clearly wasn’t modelled on the hunched lanky shape of the Darkspear, and looks strange. The back piece floats and the legs look painted on. I’m not a game designer, but at the very least it feels like it was modelled on a different races body, not the Darkspear.
Exactly, and the Wooden part of the mask is based on a mix of Zappy Boi and the WC3 Reforged Shadow Hunter, same with the boots and the gold serpent on the arm and to an extent the back rig.
If they weren’t going to do a 1-1 copy of an existing model and instead choose to jazz it up and mix n match they could have done a lot better they picked some of the worst and most basic aspects from all these sources and executed all of them poorly. It is certainly A troll look I’d be happy to have in game, just not as the Heritage Armor.
I’ll send you a letter, I’m on Stonemaul. It’s worked before and it’s worth a shot, that’s why I made mine but who knows if Blizz has even been reading these.
Yeah looks like whoever did it was trying to make a personalized Sen’Jin mask from memory and didn’t quite understand that it’s supposed to go under the nose and around he tusks covering the cheeks.
Yes, now that I’ve taken some time to look at this on a 3D model, it’s losing rating for me.
The belt & loincloth, and back piece both don’t look like they were even designed with the troll model in mind. The belt clips into male trolls legs, and the back piece floats in the air above the male trolls back. Very disappointing.
Just want to add this, the mask would be ok if it actually looked like the classic looks mentioned.
The mask never covers Troll’s noses in the images. Again, it feels less like a dev team in touch with the content, and more just paying lip service.
And don’t @me that WoW limits design, the Kul Tiran chest piece includes coat tails that aren’t tied to leg armor. So, it’s an internal choice. If they want to give Trolls a proper mask, they could… They just don’t want to.
It screams savage islander so, outside of the head piece (what is that thing?!!), I think it is well-done and if I had a troll this would definitely be their go to.
In fact, I am kinda tempted to make a troll just to get this.
I’ve heard that too, there could be some merit to it. Cheers to hoping they fix this.
You should Trolls are #1! It’s definitely “A” savage islander look, and it would be awesome to have this set in game to mix and match with BUT, it is supposed to be a Heritage Armor, not just “A” savage troll islander look. It doesn’t draw inspiration from a single concept art but takes pieces from 3 or 4, which would be fine BUT they chose some of the less unique parts of very unique existing concepts, then took the unique parts and removed things like the skulls and plates and made them look more plain.
If you’re going to take creative liberty the finish product should be better, not worse.
The cloth section of the mask is a throw back to Sen’Jin and other Witchdoctors but this mog gets it all wrong. Sen’Jin wore his UNDER his nose and around his tusks covering his cheeks, this mask covers the nose, goes between the tusks and leaves the cheeks uncovered making it look like a turkey not a large bandana style mask. The Wooden Upper part of the mask was inspired by the WC3 Shadowhunter and by Vol’Jin’s old mask, plus Zappy Boi’s mask. All of which looked better than the rendition of the wooden part on this mog, due to asymmetry, height, and a better paint job. <<<and that’s just what’s wrong with the mask let alone the other parts.
There’s a lot wrong with this, don’t get me wrong it looks cool but not as a Heritage Armor. They could have done much better.
