I scrolled back about twenty to thirty posts, looked at the criticism and went back to Wowhead to have a second look.
I based my opinion on the female wearing the red tint armor. It turns out the chest piece in that pic is just their regular bra but I still think this look, outside of hanging facecloth on the mask, is great.
With the actual heritage chest piece, I think it is still good but would have preferred a much narrower version of the top they have (and no wrap portion at waist), with the same cloth and belt crossing it diagonally.
It also wouldn’t hurt my feelings if the browns were the same rich brown as the bra instead of that dull grey-brown.
I also think the orange tint version would really benefit from using the rich brown over the dull grey-brown.
As for the male, I think the big problem is the clipping of the loincloth as that makes the cloth look thinner, shorter and ragged. I don’t play males so I need to ask, is this a problem with all loincloths on male trolls?
Oh, and putting a size-appropriate skull on the belt buckle would have looked cool.
So no, not perfect, like the white female Night Elf heritage set, but still good.

Agreed. Those shadow hunter masks look really cool in the drawings and even on Zul’jin in Heroes of the Storm, but they clearly don’t translate too well in WoW unfortunately.

It’s still in demo, but it’s right, in the sense of WC3 orcs units, why do we want to be a witch doctor, if a headhunters, Shadowhunter or a Berserker was better? What happened here Blizzard, where is the real lore? Do you want to continue looking like stupid losers with that heritage set?
But seriously, I can now see what you meant by ‘clean’; the heritage armor has an almost sedate, refined look next to Voljin’s attire, which immediately made me think primitive headhunter.
So, yeah, I can now see your point and understand your agitation.
The real issue with it is the model
Is wearing the mask wrong, it’s supposed to go under the nose, around the tusks covering the cheeks like Sen’Jin and Zul’Jin this one only covers the nose and goes between the tusks giving it a Turkey look.
They tried giving us the best of both worlds by adding a wooden voodoo mask but compared to literally every other wooden mask in game and lore it’s too short, too symmetrical and has a plain paint job. This was just an all around fail.
And that’s just the mask, there a lot wrong with the rest of the rig too.
Especially a fan of all of the clipping on the Troll models and how basic the belt and back look. To the point where it barely looks like anything Darkspear.

Also I went back and compared All the dark spear sets, Zappa Boi’s armor, etc…. This is just so boring compared to the art and designs.
We have some tusks and a snake… but where are the witch-doctor bones, the voodoo influences, effigies etc… the painted wooden mask is a reference to the painted faces of witchdoctors. This mask looks like an elementary school art project. It could be the strange decision to cover the nose with the cloth, but there are way more interesting masks we’ve seen on Trolls.
They worshipped Bwonsamdi, a loa of death. It just feels so disconnected from what little lore we actually have for the Darkspear.
Exactly. I’m really hoping this disconnected and uninspired check box type mentality doesn’t carry over to the Troll Heritage quest chain as well. I will be forever disappointed if they botch this.
Yup, spot on! I expect various hair styles on the males will do the same especially due to the posture, interesting that this male troll model is bald.
The Witch Doctor back pieces they added to the trading post and black market AH have the same issue.
One solution would be make two helms like other heritage armors have where one has the cloth and one doesn’t. Also put the nose above the cloth as well. Problem is the first draft we see from blizzard is often the only draft and changes don’t come even with good feedback.
Also set the various vanilla troll masks that are cloth or leather to cosmetic like big voodoo mask.
The Dranei heritage looks like a hot mess too I would be HEATED if i had been waiting all this time and THAT is what they came up with?? They need to fire the FF14 artists. I dont have high hopes for the Pandaren heritage armor after this. Im glad i have a good mog already for my panda
