I really don’t have the enthusiasm to jump back into arguing with you about interpretations of the faction as a whole but I am curious as to why you’d think that would be the intended fantasy on an individual player level even before people start learning about the world they’re playing.
you mean a thread where someone complains that WoW isn’t grimdark which then eventually devolves into the least masculine people you would ever meet irl crying and complaining that insert male character isn’t masculine enough?
yeah, I’m pretty sure we did.
and we’ll have another one soon enough.
Just to be sure, I ran the instance with the quest myself and carefully checked all of the dialogue, and there’s no judgement call being made about whether or not Arthas’s actions were right. Chromie’s text is exclusively about stopping the Infinite Dragonflight from meddling.
I miss dragon isles. War within is more “darker” and serious than dragon isles and I find it less interesting. Both visually and storywise. Not that there aren’t things in war within that I enjoy.
But the overall feeling of adventure has disappeared with war within. Which isn’t the best way to start a new chapter in a story lol.
In fact we are sort of leading off with my least favorite part of dragonflight which was npcs self reflecting way too much.
While I don’t think everything needs to be gloomy death grimdark, I do feel that Blizzard has kind of refused to keep in mind their aging playerbase with some of its decisions.
Even a recent blue post ripped into someone about it being a game Rated T for Teen.
Which was accurate and they were totally in the right (it was a dime a dozen post where someone was complaining about account actions due to chat/language), but does say a bit about how things are seen.
This is not a game pulling in a significant amount of teenagers.
It was in 2009.
It’s not now.
We’re basically working with a forever playerbase that will probably never leave for good, and we’re all in our 30s on average (based on general sentiment and even a recent “study”, though that was limited to like 2000 something people).
I don’t have a problem with maintaining language rules and such. That’s just an effort to keep things friendly regardless of demographic. But if they’re actively designing story and visuals around it being a “T” game, I think they’re a little lost (and I don’t mean that in a “put more gore in the game” kinda way).
“Based in the Warrior city of Durotar, they stand ready to destroy all who would challenge their supremacy”
Like even the original opening for an orc character have a hint of the darker sided of the Horde.
As much as I hate discussion like this normally I completely agree that much of the story we see if being told from what is important for the company, writers and devs to get across (because it’s important to them to make a statement) rather than invest in a story that is important to their audience. And many movies I’ve seen fall in the same bucket lately as well imo.
I enjoy anduins story but I look at the horde and wonder wtf even happened. They have lost their teeth.
last time they tried super dark was shadowlands, that didn’t go well.
I think DF did fairly well in that. At least compared to most expansions.
There you go assuming again. We’re talking about darker mature tones. DF was an example of the weaker so you cant discount it.
Was the flaying a more centered concept to the story? What about the rot? or was it a subplot that was barely worth paying attention to because it had no gravity?
I’m saying that there’s not enough of it. If we were to measure it on a scale between 1 and 10 where 1 is vulpera levels of dark, and 10 is the wrathgate, I would place TWW at a 4. It could be darker and thus more conducive to an actual war.
Less about Anduin crying and Alleria being irrational. And more about burning bug corpses, scattered bones, dread, death and destruction. Tell me a story of a platoon being surrounded by Nerubians and whittled down to the last man in the most gruesome way possible. Nobody makes it out alive.
Make me feel something for a central character that isnt “oh theyll be fine, they have plot armour”
Shadowlands’ The Maw and Torghast has awesome Dark theme Art. But many of the players didnt appreciate it. They prefer Happy Unicorn theme like Dragonflight.
Mindless violence for violence sake is not “mature”.
Faction war is over for now.
Fair I might have misremembered its been ages since I did the question. I feel like there was quest npcs that referenced it but I couldn’t honestly say where it was. It might have been in the old weekly quest?
Honestly it could be me misremembering.
They are incapable of writing anything compelling, especially anything faction war related. BFA was a joke. You expect too high a bar from this team.
They dropped the ball massively with N’Zoth and the old gods, Drust, Blood Trolls, etc.
WoW has been Disneyfied for a while now, you’re not going to get the kind of things you’re looking for from this team until maybe Midnight, where Metzen apparently entered back in. Even then its a big maybe.
You want darker stuff? Just hang out until Blood of the Dawnwalker arrives, the Witcher 3 director definitely knows how to execute on such work.
Nowadays, I wonder just how many people watch or have watched any Disney movies at all, because man, they can get really dark when they want them to.
i smell trolling
fr. everyone always complains about disney movies, meanwhile disney had a priest literally commit murder on screen and then attempted murder of an infant mere seconds later
As per Cambridge Dictionary definition of Disneyfy: “To change or present something so that it entertains or is attractive in a safe and controlled way”.
That’s not to say Disney hasn’t had some darker moments like the death of Mufasa, Bambi, etc, but the larger majority of their creations, especially in the modern era are exceptionally safe, hardly anything grim about them.
I can’t stomach much of Bellular but even he did comparison of then VS now a while back, and the game/warcraft has very much been sanitized.
Nobody is trolling. Everyone is entitled to an opinion that is not your own. People are allowed to think what they please. Stop gaslighting and get over yourself “Fluffibus”
Oh lord have mercy
