“Sometimes people are the monsters” and “sometimes monsters are people” are, like, both really standard themes in dark fantasy so what you want isn’t dark themes, it’s a justification to kill without question - that’s bog standard “heroic” fantasy

I don’t think it really needs to be FULL-BLOWN dark like “Lords of the Fallen” but definitely a little more serious. WoW always had some comic relief, but I feel like its over the top these days. Too many Goober enemies too: goblins, gnolls, kabolds. Back in Vanilla, they were heavily made fun of but gnomes still were displayed as a serious part of the world.

Trolls (the forum kind) don’t really deserve empathy if they can’t have any for others. It doesn’t affect YOUR game if someone gets a toggle for a phobia that may actually affect them in ways you don’t understand.
Stop whining like a toddler. My 12 year old is less fussy about toggles in games that don’t affect them.

it has to do with the sterilization of all media. we cant possibly offend suburban white women so we have to appease them with bland, uninspired fictional media, so they wont go ballistic on social media.

Males are the ones who tend to whine the loudest when they don’t get what they want in video games though. Ironic. Women have been playing games for decades and we never do the amount of screeching male gamers do. Over -everything- in games. Including if it’s not edgy enough for them, and if female characters exist, and ESPECIALLY if female characters exist they aren’t attracted to.
If you want serious fiction. try a book. It would probably help with that sexism you just displayed.

These changes don’t happen in a silo. Just like Blizz’s race-and-sexuality-ranking project and renaming male/female to body type 1/2, it speaks to an ethos and a culture which is terrified to offend so much that the overall game is neutered and made worse for it.
“bugs might be too spoopy lets cater to like 0.01% of players by hiding them” is bad.

From what I remember reading, arachnophobia mode was apparently rather easy to implement, and the dev responsible for categorizing mob replacement likes spiders and was enthusiastic about the opportunity. So there was really no issue with implementing it.

This game is hardly neutered just because some people have a phobia and have a toggle they can use to help with that.
