Do people find find value/enjoyment in the ring being customizable at all?
Once an optimal build is identified, is it all just an illusion of choice with some added clutter for people who min/max? Is there ever any design space at all between BiS and worthless?
And is there really any value in creating a deeper divide between people who do min/max and those who don’t?

Not at all. “Customization” of these items always ends up being a joke that turns out amounting to “I haven’t acquired the gem I want so I had to fill that slot with ANYTHING.”

Not when it makes my character look silly. I magically drop my gun and extend my palm to shoot lightning bolts. It’s jarring at best.
That and there isn’t much to customize? There’s going to be a ‘best’ for each spec and that’s even if the thing is worth equipping down the road. Inflated ilvls don’t mean much when the most meaningful stat you gain is Stam.
Booo, that is a thing for these rings too? So are the healing numbers lower for non healers too?
Still if I do 606.16M overall, if I equip the ring as is right now I would do about 601.36M (assuming it is a 16k dps loss for me) overall, that is about a 1% loss. I’d drop from 1.607M dps to 1.591M dps. A loss is a loss.

It’s supposed to be better than undermine rings until mythic

It’s 24K or 1.8% when I sim single target now. 24K might not be much if you are doing Delves or quests but it can be the difference of an M+ clear or a raid boss kill. Especially if you extrapolate that over 3 DPS in M+ or 13 in a Mythic raid.

For my main it is a 43,386 dps loss which is about 3% that is a massive loss/ from 1.451M DPS to 1.408M DPS. feels bad.

It’s a huge difference. Everyone downplaying the dps loss isn’t thinking big picture and has never experienced a sub 1% wipe on a boss you’ve been working on for weeks. Or failing a +20 by a few seconds.
Imagine 5, 10, even 20+ people each losing 1% dps. That’s an enormous amount of damage lost in total. It’s the difference between a comfortable win and an excruciating wipe.
It’s absolutely a huge deal that this ring that an entire new content patch was based around ended up launching as total garbage.

i gotta say, although im not really interested in adding to the pile on thats happening (i didn’t have any real expectations with this patch)…. I will say that not releasing all the gems right away feels kinda meh. The time gate comes from an increase in power when you upgrade the ring. The buffing it last second just made it actually appealing instead of having to wait 6 weeks for the couple % increase. But here we are with a new ring not many will currently get an increase out of. Sometimes I want to push back on the toddler tantrums on these forums for some perspective but blizz doesn’t help their cause with these types of things. Should have released the gems right away so people would be on the island for a few days and at least have an upgrade to equip. then next week start letting us increase its ilvl for power gains from there. i spent about 30 minutes on the island doing the quests and getting the 4 gems but then i just logged off. ill go again in a few days when we can acquire more gems but yeah… ngl was a little disappointed in the gems not being out. no point to raise the ilvl this week when youre not even using the gems you want.

yes, around a one percent loss. With current gems. IF you perform to your max sim potential. And if the sim is even working properly.
Blizz should let us put secondary stats on it with something like a missive AND put in the gems.
I’m not saying that once the other gems are out it will still be bad I’m just saying in the current state it is trash and the juice isn’t worth the squeeze atm. It will be the go to ring soon (TM Blizzard Entertainment).

Anyone else enjoying the intermittent replacements to the borrowed power systems of the past?
Shall we call it Rental Ring Power going forward? Rent-to-own power? Leased Luxury power?
Borrowed power has a stigma on it so we can’t use that.

I replaced a 606 ring with it. So I lost, for now at least, maybe a couple hundred haste and some versatility. But I gained around 5K Stamina, which for people running delves and doing Zek that can be a nice boost. The trade off is fine for now. In a couple weeks it will be far superior to anything else I had available.
If M+ players and raiders find it isn’t their BiS, meh that doesn’t bother me in the least.

If you are DPSing in delves then the extra time mobs have alive would likely negate the extra stamina.
What effort? Waiting a few weeks and then spending 2-5 min doing a quest is effort?
You’ll have to do the entire questline to max out the ring, and an easy but long grind still takes effort. Or maybe commitment is the more appropriate word?
The Molten Front in Cata Classic certainly wasn’t hard, but it did take time and the mount for finishing it was a pretty nice reward
