I remember when there was a boycott of it on the forums. I stuck by that for a vvveeeeerrrryyyyyyy long time. I still refuse to let their ads auto play, or any of that other nonsense.
Yeah, with how people were describing it before they took over Curse addons, I was actually hesitant to give it a go. ButâŠitâs really not that bad. lol I could maybe see some issues if it was left open for a while, much like leaving Wowhead open tends to slow some things down because itâs so ad heavy, but for what it is it does what I need it to, when I need it to. I just open it when I need updates and close it when Iâm done. Simple and quick, just the way I like it.
is this new?
i have had no isses getting my desired addons for free on curse so far.
just gotta do it âmanuallyâ.
did it change?
Completely agree
Yeah, it isnt as bad as people think it is.
âOMG ADS!!! HOW DARE THEY!!! I WANT SOMETHING FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!â
âWell, you dont have to use it, just go to the authors github page and download it and install it manuallyâ
âWHY SHOULD I DO THAT!!@!@â
Those autoplay ads were horrible lol. I would be browsing wowhead, switch to the game play that for 15 minutes then their ad would start auto playing and scare the crap out of me.
My only real issue is they installed warcraftlogs and something else alongside Overwolf without my permission, I uninstalled them but still sketchy.
The fact that that was even done once is grounds for never using said program again.
their addons are their own intellectual property I believe.
Hypersensitive people, professional rules snitchers, and virtue signalers really irk me. I thought Iâd add my whine to the whine stew in this thread.
Addons should always be completely free. If someone chooses to donate to you for making one, great. I hope that happens often tbh. But it should never be directly incentivized or turn into a career.
This is coming from someone who has made mods for other games and always give them away for free. I usually just make them for myself but figure, hey, maybe someone else would enjoy this too?
Itâs a choice that people didnât pay attention to. They just skipped through all of the boxes and then got outraged.
And they are.
With Wowup going away soon I went ahead and tried curseforge and know what it really isnât as bad as some are making it seem. While installing I made sure to read everything not just click next and I do not have that other thing they tried installing because I said no.
Also, right after installing I went into settings and made sure to close both when I exit the thing I admit I was skeptical at first but once you read the fine print so to speak and modify the settings things are ok.
So, I literally JUST installed CurseForge because I wanted to see what was going on here.
As you are going through the install process, it asks you if you want a shortcut for both CurseForge and OverWolf during the process. Both of these have a check box. Curse is on by default and OW is off by default. But this is only for the shortcut.
You are also given the option, with a check box, to install WarcraftLogs. It is also off by default.
When you are completely done installing this, the final window says âCurseForge and Overwolf successfully installedâ.
So, Overwolf is actually installed during the process, but you donât get a shortcut unless you say so.
Turns out you are both right AND wrong.
If you donât believe me, go install it yourself.
Iâm avoiding Overwolf like the plague. If I canât get an addon on wowup Iâll manually update for a while and either purge the addon or find a replacement. At least wowup is a lightweight app with a single ad I donât need bloatware on my pc thanks.
I see a lot of people saying something to the effect of, âoverwolf doesnât install malwareâ and while that may be true now, that likely wonât continue to be the case. Once the competition has been dealt with and theyâre no longer the spotlight, donât be surprised when they start using overwolf installations as trojan horses for whatever it takes to juice profits.
And if I use an addon so religiously, then yes, I think the author should be paid. And since we canât pay them directly, at least we can help them get some money for their work by sitting through some non-disruptive ads.
If we canât pay them directly, itâs the devsâ own fault. Thereâs tons of super easy to user sponsorship platforms these days⊠Patreon is the biggest one, but thereâs also Ko-fi and Gumroad among others. Hell, Github has a sponsorship system built in now. They could have these things set up in a few clicks.
And the best part is that these services will actually pay you cash, depending on service maybe even on a recurring schedule. Curse/Overwolf only pays in Amazon gift cards (at least, it did when I still had an addon hosted there).
Far as I can tell its not âgoing awayâ. They just lost access to addons that are only on curse. Curse isnât the only game in town anymore.
They just lost access to addons that are only on curse.
âLosingâ.
They havenât lost them yet.
How many times do addon developers need to say, that they make far more from curseforge contributions than they ever have from patreon. There is literally no incentive to host elsewhere for 0 dollars.
They are free?
Iâm just old school and manually update stuff. Even my GPU driver installer malfunctions so much Iâve gone back to manually deleting off the system and installing directly.
Havenât seen any malware issues. Occasionally a patch will drop and break certain addons for a long time. Thatâs about it.
