[CS Lounge] A New Year! 20-Years of WoW!

Goodness, everyone having extra rain, winds and snow, I hope you all stay safe and warm. :dracthyr_heart:

Ours didn’t go out, I’m actually super shocked. I’m glad yours came back on and you two were able to have some sort of warmth. :dracthyr_heart:

Storm day! I am finishing all the prep things so that I am over prepared in hopes that it will scare off the worst of the weather. That works right?

  • Devices all charged, battery banks charged, tool batteries charged, headlamp batteries charged.
  • Emergency radio, flashlights, camp stove, and fuel located.
  • Gutters cleaned and basement drains checked/cleaned.
  • Trash service came early so I could secure the bins. Outside battened down.
  • House vacuumed and all dishes done. I hate being stuck without power and no ability to vacuum!
  • Clean Mira! Shower taken. Plenty of clean laundry, winter clothes.
  • Need to still put aside some drinking and wash water. I keep a pair of 5 gal buckets in the bathroom closet so I can put them in the tub and fill them for storms. Easy to access, I don’t have to pick them up, and easy to drain when the storms are done (or portion water out for plants/washer/etc.).
  • Plenty of food/supplies for me and cats so no need to go out on flooded roads for a few days.
  • Schools closing early to get folks home safely before floods and winds.

I am all about the snuggles and hot tea today.

Sending love, safe wishes, and warm beverages to all!

10 cm is about 4 inches.

Imperial units are insane, I’ve been hoping the US would finally convert to the metric system for over six decades. Having said that, I prefer the more precise Fahrenheit scale to the totally arbitrary centigrade for temperature.

I would be so lost, lol! :scream: There’s so much I measure in inches, feet, miles, etc.

I’d probably be okay with metric for measurements, it would just take some getting used to, but I’m with you on temp. If it’s 90 f out, it’s just 32 c… I shouldn’t be sweating in numbers that low.

I can’t imagine it will be adopted any time soon, we’re a stubborn lot.

It’s the conversion from inches to feet, miles, etc.

I know that there are 12 inches in a foot and 5280 feet in a mile, but the math is a lot easier when there 100 centimeters in a meter and 1,000 meters in a kilometer.

Besides most of my working life I had to use metric at work then go home to imperial, and had to use half degrees for every measurement at work because of the meshuggeneh lack of precision in the centigrade scale.

They tried to convert us all back in the 70s. I remember having to learn it in grade school as part of the “movement” to it. It lasted like a year or two at most.

Any news if live chat coming back soon or are tickets still holding them back.

It’s not just the math of the measurements themselves to me, it’s the spatial measurements. I can picture an inch or foot and give an approximate visual to the size itself.

Mathematically, yes, I agree it makes it much easier.

Lucky you, try coming here to NYC. We forgot what the meaning of ‘snowstorm’ is.

Nothing yet. Response times are looking good right now, so it is likely going to be discussed soon and if things remain the same, it is possible.

I remember learning the metric system in school during the change-over. I use a mixture of metric and imperial.

Short distance/length - inches/feet
Long distance/length - meters, kilometers
Speed - kilometers/hour
weight - depends on what is being weighed
temperature - Celsius
liquid - depends on the item

For Cross Country/Track it is all in metric so you learn very well exactly how 100 meters feels, 400, a mile (1600m), a 5K (3.2 miles). You never forget that. Very long distance I still do miles.

Science was also mostly metric so for small volumes and weights I do metric.

Cooking switches my brain to cups. For anything over 2L (soda bottle) I do gallons. Weight is grams for me on small things, pounds for human weight and larger objects. I don’t do ounces in my head.

Drives my archaic parents nuts.

Spending my formative years as an American in Europe, I learned both. I was only really taught to convert from metric to U.S. measurements, though, and not the other way round (I’ve long since lost the ability, but Google’s a thing now, so…).

I think I could survive a conversion to the metric system. For me, the learning curve would only be an issue in the kitchen. It seems like metric measurements in recipes are by weight, where the U.S. system is an odd mix of weight and volume.

As far as precision, the decimal system works beautifully with metric measurements. I’d just keep the thermostat at 22.2° instead of 72°.
