There’s a difference between tying the races of the Shadowlands to the Shadowlands for lore/canon purposes, and mounts, pets and gear for gameplay purposes.
Sure, Blizzard could always say “screw it” and let them leave, but it wouldn’t make any lore sense whatsoever, and it’s vastly different than letting us take our frogs to Stormwind. Because can you imagine backlash if they didn’t let us use a whole expansion’s worth of mounts outside of that expansion?
Well, the denizens of the Shadow lands do serve souls and the cycle of life and death in one form or another, wouldn’t it benefit them to learn more about the life portion of the life and death cycle?
They can leave to carry out the duty they’re charged with. They can’t leave because “lol I think I’m gonna go to the mall in Ironforge for funs lol”.
They can’t just say “yeah I know we’ve kind been following the order of things for millennia, and I know I already lived once, and this is my existence now, and that’s how it is, but I think I’m gonna leave and go quest in Westfall and help the Alliance kill the Horde now, just feels like what I’d rather do”
I mean sure but that’s irrelevant. Obviously if they were ARs they would have different motivations so their previous duty wouldn’t be in play. As long as they can physically/mechanically leave then that’s not a point.
Anyway, still doesn’t mean they should be ARs. All of them are comprised of members of both sides, it’d be stupid if they became part of a faction.
Disproven many, many, many times in every single part of the quest text. ZERO quest text says they can’t leave. Several quests have you leave WITH THEM! Even afterleaves shorts showed them leaving. I don’t know where y’all get it in your head that they can’t leave the shadowlands. That’s literally never, ever been stated.
It does. They can leave, and do. But most choose not to. They only leave when duty compells them too. So if we befriend them and the maw-walker says. OHEY YOU SHOULD JOIN MY FACTION! How could they say no? In the very least they’ll send a garrison of soldiers.
Except absolutely no lore in the game supports you assuration that they can’t leave the shadowlands. Did you even play the pre patch? That’s the first confirmation we get. Several other quests also involve them leaving or talking about leaving.
Lore does not distinguish between “duty” and “lolfunsies”. They can leave, they can leave. Duty doesn’t magically allow them to leave. Besides the story will allow them to leave for the sake of duty anyways. Duty to repay the impossible debt that the mawwalker and allies earned.
Physically, can they leave the Shadowlands? Yes, they do this only when performing the duties they were assigned.
Will they be allowed to abandon their covenants to re-join mortals in Azeroth in the next expansion? No, unless Blizzard makes some stupid lore that says they will.
They won’t be abandoning their covenants. They’ll be joining the horde/alliance because the mawwalker asked them too. It’s called repaying a debt. And if the next expansion is involving evil light or void they’ll want to fight that to protect the shadowlands and the cosmic balance of the universe. So it’s not “some stupid lore” it’s logical conclusion. You literally save these factions from extinction, you save the entire universe. I think saying “Hey would you be willing to send a garrison of your finest soldiers back to the mortal world with me to help me with my issues?”
Like that’s literally just how politics work. It’s called quid pro quo. WE SAVED REALITY! I think asking for a few soldiers is the bare minimum they could give us in return.
Also you’re assuming the next expansion will take place on azeroth, maybe it will, maybe it won’t. But you make a lot of negative assumptions.
I’m angry because I get very upset when people straight up make things up or twist the facts to suit their narrative.
The duty of the playable covenant races will be to assist the mortals of azeroth in whatever the heck they request of them because the covenants owe their very existence to the mortals of azeroth.
Honestly I see this is an inevitable conclusion to this expansion.
This was just a pre-release headcanon and has been debunked repeatedly. Right off the bat, the kyrian’s job is to come ferry mortals to the Shadowlands and the Mawsworn kyrian had no difficulty entering Azeroth during the Scourge invasion through the big, gaping hole in the sky.
The Shadowlands is the afterlife for mortals and gods, but it’s still just a plane of existence and its inhabitants so far haven’t been hinted to be physically incapable of leaving. They should be able to enter other planes just as the Void can enter both theirs and ours.
A major gripe for me is that most discussion here about Shadowlands races becoming playable has people insisting “Blue Covenants go blue faction, red Covenant and orc/undead Covenant go red faction” as if there aren’t the souls of Horde races in Bastion, the Necrolords don’t have Alexandros, or Ardenweald doesn’t have loa stuff. Imagine serving the Horde in life, becoming a Kyrian in death, and then getting sent back to Azeroth to die again for the Alliance, because reasons.
So long as a backdoor exists, travel to other dimensions in WoW’s 'verse is entirely possible, and entirely feasible. We’ve seen it happen several times already.
Physically, we enter the Emerald Dream’s locations several times(? if i’m not mistaken), and the Emerald Dream has been materialized and/or possessed/corrupted from our plane of existence several times.
Physically, the Void enters WoW’s 'verse several times. Including but not limited to, as well, the Shadowlands.
Physically, the living have entered The Shadowlands.
Physically, the “dead” (Kyrian/ Spirit Healers (Kyrian)/ Mawsworn) have ventured to Azeroth, and back to the Shadowlands.
Those touched by Fel/ chaotic energies return to a space/plane of existence known as the Twisted Nether, and still are able to ‘exist’ and interact with the physical plane of existence–even up to the point that they can possess/take over a vessel suitable to their soul and continue ‘living’.
If that’s Night Elf Worgen, I’m totally on board.
I’d quite like to play as one. I’d really like to see their druid forms all be wolf based. I’d race change my night elf druid in a heart beat.
