Tauren rogue should never be a thing.
Gnome Demon Hunters.
No, wait. That would be AWESOME!
Every race can be a pirate (outlaw).
For what it’s worth, I would be a lot happier with opening every class to every race if we were to make class skins a thing. Part of the problem is that some classes have A LOT of lore baked into their class identity. As an example, Warriors don’t have a lot of baked in lore because at the end of the day they’re just someone who hits things with weapons and no race has an exclusive claim to that. On the flipside, Druids are one of the more restrictive classes because the source of their magic is a large part of their identity and that’s not something that every race has equal access to. Paladins suffer a similar problem where the source of their power is in most cases the Holy Light. Not every culture in WoW holds The Light in high esteem.
But I do think that there are lore justifications to reach similar end points from different methods. We see this already in game a little bit with Druids. Night Elf Druids get their power from the Emerald Dream but Zandalari dinomancers aren’t quite the same thing and neither are Kul Tiran thornspeakers.
If we were able to have class skins such that we could have Priests that aren’t explicitly Priests of the Light or something similar then I would feel a lot better about it. The issue mainly comes from how tightly wound up in a specific kind of lore a class is compared to others.
Here’s how I view how specific the lore is for each class:
Generic lore (I’m fine with every race having free access to these classes)
Warrior
Hunter
Monk
Rogue
Moderately Specific Lore (You can probably handwave most races that get these classes as just similar looking results but some races I’d feel better with class skins)
Mage
Warlock
Shaman
Priest
Death Knight
Extremely Specific Lore (I’d really want class skins to explain a different power source for new races that get these classes)
Druid
Paladin
Demon Hunter
Evoker
My void elf holy priest would like to know where she can access her AoE explosion ability you speak of. Holy nova is… um… lacking.
To play devil’s advocate, the way Blizzard can justify Velf and LFD priest because they have two different orders (Light and Void.)
Paladins don’t have two orders.
It’s a travesty they gave monk to vulpera but not goblins.
I think that’s always been a bit of an issue with Priest’s class identity.
Well maybe “issue” is too strong a word. But the gist is that some classes have a much stronger or specific class identity than others. Priest is probably the only class where they seem to have MULTIPLE class identities depending on their spec. Other classes don’t really have that problem. The fantasy of a Blood DK isn’t that much different from an Unholy DK, they’re both the same brand of gross, just different flavors. Whereas Shadow feels wholly disconnected from Holy.
Their three specs offer an interesting linear progression with how far on the Light/Shadow axis the individual is, but having all three come as a package deal makes it a little weird. It runs us into issues where it would be a crime for Void Elves not to have access to Shadow Priest, but doing so requires that they also access Holy Priest, which makes a little less sense. Similarly, LFD definitely should have Holy Priest, but Shadow feels a little off.
I think that’s a problem unique to Priest though.
Void elf Holy priests aren’t a canon thing
If shadow wasn’t a spec, void elves would never have gotten priests.
But they couldn’t really not give void elves elves void spec. That would be completely silly.
Alot of things have to be considered on these combos ,some don’t have lore for them but have to be introduced in the now sense of the word but not from the base of the games lore. just as humans as mages had to learn magic from the highelves ,the Tauren would have to learn being a mage in time. This just can’t just drop in a game .
The three combos that trigger me the most when people suggest them are forsaken paladins, void elf paladins, and draenei warlocks.
The first two should never work. Forsaken and Void Elves both should technically be destroyed by trying to to channel the light.
Draenei have spent their entire lives being hunted by the eredar and the burning legion, they should hate warlocks, not become them.
This is true… but my velf holy priest still wants the über laser cannon the OP speaks of lol.
Draenei/Lightforged Draenei - I absolutely want one of these for the “fight fire with fire”. We can already rock LF Shadow priests.
Undead- Paladins - They already existed in lore back in Naxxramas, if they can be Priests, they should be able to be Paladins as well.
Orc and Mag’har Orc- Paladin - Why not? There were Garrosh supporters in the current Orcs, there could well be secret Yrel supporters who came to Azeroth to prepare for the coming Blazing Crusade
Worgen- Paladin - If NE can become Paladins in lore, Worgen should be just as well via Elune.
Void Elf- Paladin - Should be a Void/shadow version of it, imo
They could come up with some BS that the Void elves end up filtering their Light energy through the shattered remains of Xe’ra or somthing.
just stop
gameplay > your rp cr4p
Yeah why not? I don’t care.
The way I look at it, if they’re really throwing race/class combos out the window, I’m going to have fun with it and have four of every class with the following races:
- Tauren
- Highmountain Tauren
- Draenei
- LF Draenei
Hooves 4 life
???
This is the first I’ve heard of this. Human mages have existed since Warcraft 1 as Conjurers, before Elves were a major staple of the lore.
Don’t be rude. I understand that for some people the gameplay concerns trump RP concerns but for other players the story and lore is a major part of what gets them invested in the game world. Telling them that their concerns should necessarily give way to yours is a little uncalled for.
We as human had to learn magic we didn’t pick it up out of the blue we learned in from the high elves .
I dont have issues with them giving all races all classes.
But I do take issue with them doing it within the system we currently have now.
If they use the classes for the gameplay, but each race got different animations and did a different type of damage to reflect what their lore version of the class is, then it’s cool.
Druids kinda do this sometimes, but it needs to go further than that.
I don’t think that’s true. You’ll need to supply me with a source for that.
Dalaran, the current seat of arcane power, was one of the seven human kingdoms. It was founded by Arathai (read as: human) mages. While humans had had dealings with Silvermoon in the past they didn’t have any official alliances until Warcraft 2. Before that though mages weren’t unheard of in Lorderon with Conjurers being a staple unit in Warcraft 1 and Medivh and Khadgar being probably the foremost examples of human mages from that time period. I’m not seeing anything in their history about learning magic from high elves. There definitely were high elf mages and have been for quite some time, but I’m not seeing anything about how they relate to human mages.
