Which clearly the Tauren rogues that already exist have laxed there standards as we will now be seeing more Tauren rogues visable…
This is just for the sake of discussion because I think all race/class combos are happening one day. It just feels like Blizzard is heading that direction.
Anyways, here’s my list and the reasoning:
Orc Paladins - no source for them
Mag’har Paladins - their recruitment scenario is about them rejecting the Light
Nightborne, Blood Elf and Void Elf Druids - they have always used arcane magic to mutate and bend nature to fit their needs. Example: blood elves keeping their forest in an eternal spring just to make it “pretty”. Stuff like that goes against every thing a Druid is about.
Void Elf Paladins - Unlike priest, there is no shadow spec
Draenei Warlocks - their backstory is about them rejecting fel and trying to escape it
Undead Druids - the undead are an abomination of nature
Undead Paladins - the only undead paladins that exist are raised and controlled by powerful necromancers. I think that means that they can only deal with the pain the Light causes them when they have no will.
I’ll repeat, this is just for the sake of discussion. I really don’t care anymore if Blizzard removes all race/class combos. Tired of arguing about it.
None.
There is no class/race combo that can’t happen.
Paladins - need to shove some light up places… don’t question.
Druids - love nature
Warlocks - rules, what rules?
Demon Hunter - Warlocks with an extra edge.
I think demon hunters would thematically fit as they are foes of the legion.
Open all possible race / class combinations or neither
And eredar are part of the Illidari.
Worgen /Micdrop
I personally think not every class/race combo should happen. But I’ll roll with the punches if it happens because it’s not that big of a deal to me. I just hope they have some explanation as to why certain races can be certain classes.
Really the only hard sells would be paladin, druid, warlock, and demon hunter.
Specifically lightforged Draenei being warlocks and demon hunters. Void elves being paladins.
But I think class skins could potentially fix this issue.
i never get tired of saying this but imagine waiting 18+ years to play a blood elf paladin when the game is long past its peak
Undead paladins
Blood elf druids/shamans
In my honest ,my opinion, excuse me I’m an old fashion, if it’s not based on lore from the past ,it’s not a combo in game and shouldn’t be but by all means do change the past.
Man’ari, the ‘demon’ version of the Eredar may want to return to their kin, the Draenei now that they are ‘free’.
I see no reason why Velen wouldn’t forgive them and allow them back. Giving Draenei access to Warlock and Demon Hunters.
Disagree! All of those are perfectly feasible. Anyone can and should be any class. Makes perfect sense that some draenei would turn to darker means to their ends. There’s nothing preventing worgen from being paladins except arbitrary limitations. I don’t know why people keep saying “but explosion” about void elves. Light and Void are “opposites” in many senses, but they also depend upon each other. I think a void elf embracing the Light to embody that duality is actually pretty interesting in terms of a character concept. As for orc paladins of either kind - there’s nothing preventing individuals from devoting themselves to the Light. We need to move away from this idea that an entire race is a monolith and that all share the same beliefs. Finally, undead paladins are another concept that I find really appealing on a story perspective. You say “A paladin would be in excruciating pain constantly” - Imagine the amount of will and discipline that person would need to have. It’s impressive and just a cool concept.
Big winner of the upcoming class changes are the Highmountain Tauren. They get three complete new classes.
I’m really disappointed with the announcement honestly. I think that the classes a race can’t be do just as much for that race’s culture and identity as the classes that they can be do. I don’t think setting an endpoint of “there should be no race/class restrictions” and then rushing to that endpoint as quickly as possible is good for the lore of the game. And I know they still care about that sort of thing, otherwise they would have opened up Paladin and Warlock. They didn’t with the caveat that it’s a future goal, but it requires more writing groundwork to be set. Seems like a bad way to go about writing as opposed to letting it unfold more organically.
So I guess they’re telling us straight up that it’s inevitable. This isn’t a hill I’m really willing to die on, but I’m tired of deciding that certain defining aspects of the game are “archaic” and thus we must trample them with all speed.
I’ll be the first to acknowledge that there is something to be gained with opening up race/class combos, yet very few people seem to be willing to acknowledge that there’s something lost in exchange. If that’s a price that Blizzard and the majority of the player base are willing to pay then so be it. Can’t always make everyone happy. But it’s not a change I’m going to celebrate.
You realize that stories don’t just develop spontaneously out of the ether, right? That’s not how writing works. It is perfectly normal to have a goal and then figure out how to write your way there.
I don’t think you have anything to worry about with regards to lore. There’s no hard reason that X race would never be able to be Y class. I don’t think the game suffers from opening up the options in any way, and in fact we gain a lot by providing opportunities for interesting stories for players to tell with their characters.
That’s mostly because Blizzard keeps creating exceptions to the hard reasons why X race can’t be Y class every time they want to open it up. Simply telling me that my concerns about how the lore is being handled are trivial does shockingly little to allay my worries.
I am of course fully aware that creative works can be directed to suit the needs of the story. My concern is that I don’t trust Blizzard to do so well. I’m still shuddering over “Goblins are so good at deals that they’re able to swindle elements to let them be Shamans.” And like I said, I think that restrictions add as much lore and flavor as what classes they’re allowed to be. Night Elves not being able to be Mages was a major part of their lore since they swore off Arcane magic after the War of the Ancients and I thought that the justification for reintroducing that was half-baked. So that’s what I expect moving forward - a bunch of half-baked lore excuses to rush to the end goal of every race being every class.
Look I get that the end goal is inevitable here. Just stop asking me to like it.
For me the combination of race/class should be as follows:
Aliance
-Human: all
-Dwaf: all, except Demon Hunter
-Dark Iron Dwarf: all, except Demon Hunter and Druid.
-Gnomo: these are fine as they are for me.
-Mechagnome: these are fine as they are for me
-Night Elf: all, except Warlock
-Draenei: all, except Demon Hunter and Warlock
-Lightforged Draenei: all, except Demon Hunter and Warlock
-Worgen: all, except Demon Hunter
-Void elf: all, except Druid
-Kul Tiram: all, except Demon Hunter
Horde
-Orc: all
-Mag’har Orc: all, except Demon Hunter and Warlock
-Troll: all
-Zandalari Troll: all
-Tauren: all, except Demon Hunter and Warlock
-HighmountainTauren: all, except Demon Hunter and Warlock
-Forsaken: all, except Druid
-Blood elf: all, except Shaman
-Nightborne: all, except Shaman
-Goblin: these are fine as they are for me
-Vulpera: these are fine as they are for me
Neutral
-Pandaren: all, except Demon Hunter and Warlock
I hope I haven’t forgotten any race XD
Goblins and Worgen should be able to be monks… I really would play a worgen monk ala Jon Talbain from Darkstalkers
No. It’s not. It’s literally the Cosmic chart and Turalyon/Alleria’s story.
Yes. It absolutely will. I despise homogenized boring crap when games do this. Racial culture loses all meaning and so does lore. And I personally hate it.
The moment they let everyone be absolutely everything, I’ll let y’all have fun with it without me, because I’ll be walking away. Inb4 “good riddance,” I honestly don’t care what anyone thinks about that. I won’t be the only to walk away.
