Well, I don’t think NBN affects latency exactly. I actually get lower latency on adsl2 with interleaving disabled (which I don’t think NBN can do).
I hate playing BFA and getting matched with non-OCE servers. It changes my 20 ping to 200-300 when being matched to the US. It makes the game unfun, and melee useless
This is why I’m looking forward to no sharding/cross servers on classic.
If there is still matching with US servers then I’ll probably skip classic and play BFA. At least you can do 2’s with an OCE buddy for a higher chance of low latency PVP.
You could always buy your own international cable, u got a couple billion $s lying around?
Precisely this. I want to play rogue in classic and I’m looking forward to it but it will kill it if I have to play on 200+ ping
Be interested to know as well.
I doubt they will, but they may surprise us.
I’d really like to know how many NA servers, and their names!! Will they be the same as existing, or a completely different nameset?
I’m going to be there optimist and say they will! Not sure about naming conventions but they keep the old names and just have “Classic” next to it? E.g. Frostmourne Classic
I think if they release one PVP, PVE and RP server for Oceanic it would be nice. That would be a really tightknit group and you may not need to worry about the realm dying. Since if you can get just 5% of the Oceanic players that’s 10,000 players. (assuming like 200,000 oceanic players?) So around 3,500-4,000 per realm? That’d be really nice.
I think that would be a good start. If they need to add more realms later they can (after the tourists leave). Better than having too many then xrealm.
They are going to shard us at launch, so my expectation is that we will release with a relatively small number of servers for Oceanic. It’s hard to estimate because we have no idea of active retail subs for Oceania now, and no real way to know what the numbers coming back for classic will be.
This is really the biggest unknown with Classic. How many people will play at launch and how many will leave after one/two months. As access is available with a retail sub, it means the tourist equation is a very real issue for all realm populations, but more so for smaller regions.
The last thing Blizzard wants is dead servers and mergers after 6 months. This is why we are getting sharding whether we like it or not. They will shard for the first month, maybe two, until the tourists start to trickle back to retail or off to other games entirely. Then, and only then, will Blizzard know how many servers they will need and can then expand from the small number at launch onto a more stable number.
So sharding will be terrible for server community in the beginning but will ultimately be the best option for a healthy server.
If they’re adding servers that late, they already messed up. They need to use metrics around how many characters get past level 20 (i.e. like the trial to sub conversion in Retail). If they’re seeing more than 10% of the population getting through, they need more servers. If they wait until a few months after, all the initial servers will be full (if they’re going to be popular).
There is going to have to be a lot of data collected and sifted through to figure this out. What if 50% of players in the first month are tourists who will leave? Is 50% too high, is it not high enough? No one at all knows this right now, and Blizzard will only have an idea as the release progresses.
They will not be able to gather this information in the first couple of weeks, as people will still be joining after waiting a few weeks for the initial excitement to die down a bit.
It is going to be a big headache for Blizzard to juggle this and I don’t think enough of the playerbase have really given it much thought, to be honest. Many of us want to be playing for years and years, but how many of us are there really? Those of us here talking about this stuff are in the tiny minority.
It’s all just guesswork and I don’t envy Blizzard at all.
OCEANIC SERVERS!!1!!
I dont know why people think they wont have oce servers. They have it for all their games, including hots.
The issue is with playing classes that are affected by latency, like rogue, or casters, and then being sharded/crossrealmed with NA servers.
There will be oceanic servers lol. I think people think there won’t be because there wasn’t any in the original game. Why would there not be oceanic servers? Name one good reason lol.
Try a warrior - charge, spin around looking for the target “oh, it’s 30 feet over that way, was it a mage who blinked? Nope, just a priest and laaaaaaaag”.
Climate Change!
#nochanges - wasn’t in vanilla!
Tbh I can’t see them not having oce servers but I know a lot of people who are waiting to see if there will or won’t be before they play. They’re essentially going to be planning their lives over this decision. So what’s wrong with getting a few words from a blue?
I accidentally joined an Aussie server when I first started, because the realm picker “recommended” it to me (and may others in the US, evidently). Would love the opportunity to make the same mistake again!
Well i mean i hope they do have servers, one weird this is that you guys don’t even have your own classic fourms. Which i dono why. Not that i don’t want you guys here because <3 but it’s just strange.
Just not enough of us. The Oceanic forum doesn’t have a lot of activity and if you split us all off in Classic, there would be 20 people posting - this might be fun and we’d get to know each other pretty well, but we’d only be rehashing what is said here.
And besides, these forums need a bit of class.
